No More Collector's Editions

^Ah, right, cheers for the info. I was pissed off when I discovered it wasn't on the disc, I was really looking forward to playing Q2 on a beast like the 360.

I only buy limited editions that include fancy stuff other than lame mini artbook and mini ost. Which incidentally usually coincide with editions actually limited in numbers, in that not everybody is able to get one.

Looking back at the last special editions that I got:

Ni no kuni - Pricey but worthwhile, the book is awesome and actually useful, and I really dig plushies. Also it's actually "limited".
Diablo III - The game I didn't like very much, but for the price asked there was quite a lot of stuff (usb key, yes please). Basically the same content as Starcraft II which I enjoyed, so I went with it. Also actually kind of limited, at least on launch day.
Dark Souls - Meh. I knew I'd love the game, loved it, so got the "special edition". Rubbish.
Zelda Skyward Sword - I wanted a motion plus wiimote anyway, and I really liked the looks. Not bad.

So I guess I go for the "worthwhile" ones.

Lamest special edition I ever bought is probably Final Fantasy XIV. A fake metal cup with a warning not to use it for drinking or storing food ? Seriously.

Of course its better with hindsight, wait a generation before lamenting all these so called mistakes.

I still love some of my limited editions/boxes mind...lords of shadow, some of the square psp games etc.

Some blatantly are pointless still though...

They will also slap "limited edition" on just about anything now too, i bought a game a year or so back when the limited editions where all gone, and even the standard copies came with the DLC that was supposed to make the limited edition....you know, limited.

Last time i checked DLC wasn't limited, far from it in fact.

Wasn't there only the day one edition? It was standard price if that's the one you're talking about so I wouldn't exactly call that an LE or a waste of money...it was more them giving their fans something more for buying it early. I quite liked it.

The proper Japanese art book I got is miles better than the little one you get in it, though.

Never bought a collectors edition unless it was the default version of the game (Like with Blazblue). I can see why people buy collectors editions but at the end of the day they are what they are, collectors items.

Glad finally that the penny has dropped for some. Spending ?10-20+ more on a CE when it could go towards your next game always seemed like madness to me.

I'm still laughing about the Bioshock SE (My brother bought it, funny as hell). I guess there is a market for ****e though. It still amazes me when I see images of amazing home cinema installs (for example) and see they have finished it off with either a full size Predator bust or an Alien figure, just to add that extra ****ness to the finished install.

I had this habit too but it is generally a waste of money for the most part. Most don't even hold their value either, although I did recently manage to sell my Bioshock LE (with the Big Daddy figurine) on Ebay for nearly ?70 to some guy in New Zealand and Mass Effect for about ?50 the week before ME 3 so there are some exceptions!

Most are filled with tat that won't be looked at more than once. Forza 3 is probably my favourite limited edition - it came with a snazzy keyring AND a 2GB USB stick which I still use regularly to this day

I don't mind getting an S/C/LE if it has a soundtrack CD or some such. Shmups are a good example. I enjoy the music so I'll gladly pay the extra money to listen to it "legally" although I just rip it so it'll stay in the case untouched after that. The Wizard's Edition for Ni no Kuni with a beautiful and more importantly useful Wizard's Companion is also worth it IMO. Other good LEs are one's with LE controllers in them like Tales of Xillia 2 or God of War Ascension. I don't know if they have them outside of Japan but definitely a "good" buy if one is in need of a new controller. Otherwise I'd never bother with figures or other crap.

I've never seen a collectors edition this gen that didn't look cheap and tacky. I think the last one i bought was the De La Jet Set radio one.

Ni No Kuni's? Not sure how that's cheap/tacky if you think it is.

Yeah, as a 29 year old man I always wanted to fork out 140 quid for a teddy bear called "Drippy" and a "Spellbook".

Why do people keep saying ?140 for Ni No Kuni WE? The RRP was ?80, and most people had it between ?20-30 cheaper than that- the only time it's been ?140 is when the eBay gougers appeared.

Even for 50 quid, why would you want a teddy and a spell book? It's just complete tat unless you are 11 or under.
