OK, so the next gen launches and your chosen console/s requires you to be online enabled to play your games so that the parent company can ensure your using official copies of your games and can tag them so you can't sell them on.

Would this genuinely affect your decision to buy the new console/s?

Not really.

I can re-download all the digital games I brought on Steam, Xbox Live & PSN. Considering how many times I've sold my current generation collection, only to buy it back a year or 2 later, you can say I trust them!

That brings the question but what about in 10 years time? Well my Dreamcast console stopped reading discs and accepting a controller port, the discs were prone to stop reading with the smallest of scratches, PSone lasers require being turned upside down, my 486 has been superseded by my dual boot 2012 MacBook Pro (Rendering most of my old classics useless) and my battery pack SNES games no longer keep a save.

All old game hardware will eventually pack up and cartridges and discs will turn to dust. I tend to keep one foot in the present and one in the past, with my collection being a few of my favourite classics along with modern games. I've stopped worrying about collecting everything and needing to preserve hardware as something to play when I'm retired and want to play through Doom on XBLA again.

I'm enjoying it whilst I've got it rather than worrying about the future. I've got 40 Megabyte Fibre Optic Broadband so as long as there's great games to play on Xbox 3 and PS4, I'm game!

You can go an buy a working dreamcast right now if you want. Or have an existing one repaired. When EA say no more BF4 for you though there's nothing you or anyone can do about it.

Option 2 for me. If that means WiiU then so be it.

There is literally no way I would miss out on games like Metal Gear Solid or Grand Theft Auto solely because I couldn't resell them. Option 5 for me.

Which have the same built in lifespan as any other piece of Hardware. Including my much missed DC.

I know the On / Off Switch that companies like EA wield are more powerful, but I won't be playing Battlefield 3 in a few years time as I'll be playing something else. But then again, I trust Microsoft, Sony & Valve as they've earned my trust after years of service. Doesn't bother me at all, provided the pricing is similar to Steam and companies don't charge ?45 for games delivered digitally, shafting us and stuffing the extra cash in the pockets of marketing firms.

EDIT: Oh, one other thing - it has to make game "rarity" a thing of the past to really be worth it. With the stores being digital I want to be able to buy next gen's equivalents of Etrian Odyssey, Faselei! or Xenoblade whenever I want for a reasonable price.

Slight aside, but I really don't like where this is all going with every company under the sun setting up their own digital distribution service ; it's the main reason I haven't bothered with Far Cry 3 which I know is great, but yet another account/service running to play the game I bought? no thanks.

I'm going to wait until the dust has settled with digital distribution scene before I return full on to modern gaming - for the time being retro and the odd steam game is fine.

I only see this type of added hurdle becoming more prevalent with the next gen and given the option, I'll choose the company that doesn't try to employ the Ubisoft or Rockstar method of 'always online'.

What concerns me is that you're right, this is a pain - but if publishers want to get the widest reach to a consumer base on a single platform, they'll probably go with Facebook... <shudder>

I'd definitely become more careful about what I bought. It would mean only buying things I "knew" would be good and maybe take a punt on something different after it bombs and retailers reduce the price to clear stock.

EDIT; That could help with the "backlog" problem as I wouldn't be buying things day 1 and letting half finished games fall buy the wayside.

Anyway, I'd buy the console if it would have enough games I wanted, but I'd probably buy most of the games on sale (which I do already actually).

Assuming there is a sufficient amount of games I fancy on Durango or Orbis I would buy the system and the games as new as I have done for years.
If Internet access is required at all times it's not a problem. Cable is pretty reliable and if I was desperate I could use my phone as a wireless hotspot.
Second hand games are bad for publishers and platform holders and ultimately they will jump on any tech that could increase their return on investment.

I pay for all of my games and I'm tired of being made to jump through hoops because of the mentality that dictates that every game pirated is somehow a lost sale. If the system described is implemented, then it's just going to lead me to piracy in turn. If there was some way to pay for the games I'd pirate on some kind of honour system (where payment doesn't implicitly support anti-consumer practices), I'd use that instead.
