Hmmm... I don't know how Orange Box can be a game in itself. It's a collection. There have been many bundles and collections, do they all count as a single selection? And no handhelds...? Hmm, I say. Hmmmm.

The reason why I put it there is because as far as value is concerned, there hasn't been a better release this generation. Yes its a collection of games, but each one deserves to be in the top ten.

The issue with handhelds is what generation are we talking about? PSP and DS or Vita and 3DS or both?

            random order;

            Uncharted 2
            Neir
            Dark Souls
            Metal Gear Solid 4
            Bioshock 2
            Dead space 1
            Dragon's Dogma
            Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
            Skyrim
            Resident Evil 5

Would of put assassin creed in it but I cant narrow it down to a single one of the games as the best.

It's weird, but I found The Orange Box a bit of a slog, sorry!

I loved the original Half-Life and played mods on it for years afterwards.
So many exciting set-pieces that I still remember to this day and are still pretty clear now.
That probably helps that I found it was installed on the Mother-in-law's PC and started replaying it!

HL2 didn't seem to be anywhere near as engaging. It seemed to be fighting the same gunship about 18 times and driving around a bit...

By that I assume you never got passed that section then, or never played episodes 1 & 2 as well, both of which were also in the Orange Box. Up until that point in the game HL2 is fairly generic I would agree with that, however if you take it in its entirety its still one of the best games ever made. Add Portal and Team Fortress 2 to the mix as well and you basically have the perfect package really.

This was at the time of course, Portal has since been succeeded by the quite excellent Portal 2, and the source engine is really starting to show its age now.

But as stated as pure value alone it deserves to be in the Top 10.

Hear him, hear him! A truth seldom spoken. HL1 was considerably better than HL2. For a start, it had a lot more guns. Secondly, the guns were more diverse. HL2 felt like an endless corridor on a boat, and then another corridor in a car.

It might look that way, but I promise I played through Half-Life 2, Episode 1, Episode 2 and Portal!
I'm not a fan of multiplayer, so I've not played Team Fortress though.

I liked it and thought the Ravenholm section was suitable spooky, I guess I found the whole thing a little empty.
I wanted to enjoy it becuase I loved the first game so much.

However, the point of this thread is to celebrate what we've enjoyed this generation, not disagree with other people and their choices, so I'm sorry.

OK, I don't have a Wii, so I've only played a little Galaxy when I borrowed one for a weekend.
I've hardly touched my PS3 as there are more games than time to play them all.
I've only played a fraction of the number of games most of you have, so this is a personal list and it's in no particular order!

                      Lost Planet (Series)
The first game was a fun SP, but the MP was one of the first games I could get into. I didn't get "owned" and the game felt very balanced (go for the kills or activate the data posts?).
The sequel is one of my fave games ever though. Exciting, varied levels (space, desert, snow, jungle, underwater, rain, day, night etc) with brilliant co-op elements (mech merging, Power Ranger poses, team shield cannons).
Plus, some of the bosses are draw-dropping, screen-filling behemoths!

                      Left4Dead (Series)
Both games are still brilliantly playable. Everybody who plays this has war stories. I see L4D like a football game. It might be the same objective and rules, but no two games are the same. It depends on who you play with and what the game throws at you. Majestic.

                      Bioshock
A brilliantly made, underwater epic. I didn't see the twist coming and I really enjoyed exploring the levels.

                      Perfect Dark Zero
Not much love for this game, but this was the game that showed the 360 had nailed online gaming perfectly. The wireless pad, the headset and everybody on the same kit. I couldn't believe I was chatting with people in America whilst jumping onto the bonnet of a hovercraft with the enemy team's flag.

                      Earth Defense Force (series)
I put off playing EDF 2017 because it was only splitscreen co-op, not online. Prinnysquad convinced me otherwise and I absolutely loved it! Giant enemies and hundreds of them. It was corny and creaky, but sweet mother-of-pearl, it was fun!
I also wanted to rate Insect Armageddon, because although it didn't last long before people moved on, those of us who played it together experienced some of the most thrilling co-op this gen has to offer. It was nailbiting stuff watching Katsujinken avoiding hectors whilst trying to revive me and VanPeebles!

                      Fallout 3
Once I realised you could fight in VATS, I started enjoying the combat as much as the adventure. Seeing a new location on the map and exploring it was fantastic. Creeping around derelict buildings, hoping the supermutants didn't spot you was really tense.

                      Forza 3
I played this for ages, and probably spent as much time doing the decals as actually racing!
Drifting down the Japanese mountain pass was sublime.

                      Rainbow Six: Vegas (series)
Although 2 is good, it was the original Vegas that set the co-op benchmark that no other game has beaten.
4 player campaign co-op, terrorist hunt, lots of guns, night sight and thermal imaging. Brilliant.

                      Stuntman: Ignition
Not many people have played this, but I adored it. I'd rather be powersliding through a box-filled alley or jumping an open drawbridge than racing other people round a circuit.

                      Red Dead Redemption
Great game, lots to do (I loved all the hunting quests) and a gripping storyline.

                      Special Mentions:
Minecraft - brilliant to see what people make!
Batman: Arkham Asylum - Perfectly packaged adventure
Dead Island - really tense first-person brawler with great co-op
Guitar Hero (series) - I've spent a lot of time looking at coloured dots scrolling down the screen!
Oblivion - I only played this last year and it's still an amazingly deep game. Can't believe this came out less than a year after the 360 launched.
Call of Duty 2 - For a launch title, I found this exciting and varied. The different difficulties changed the game and many hours were spent online making up our own games (hide and seek, take the tower)
Condemned - I think I may have squealed when those mannequins moved!

Another one here who enjoyed HL2 and the Eps but without doubt found HL1 superior. Good as it was its one piece of a puzzle that lends me to feel Valve is good... but not quite as good as many (and Gabe) thinks it is.

Although I preferred the atmosphere of Half Life over Half Life 2, I can never get over how terrible the last few hours of the original are.

Everyone remembers the slow paced opening, the creepy lighting and the air vents, but the long, boring, slog through an alien world to round the game off ruins the experience. Some people thought the same of Half Life 2 because of the air boat or coastal drive sections, but they were my favourite parts for the chilling atmosphere.

Either way, both games are brilliant but I guess it comes down to personal preference.
