That reminds me, X2 on the PS1 was hard. It was also crap.

Mine would have to be (in no particular order):
Robotron 2084
I'd love to be good at this game and for two levels I can con myself into thinking that I am. However, as soon as things get tough I just wilt. Such a difficult game to play but for the few brief moments that I've spent 'in the zone' it's amazing. If I had the time and the will power I'd be stick with it but, alas, I have neither.
Art of Fighting 2
I've read that once you know how to play it (ie the cheap AI exploits) it becomes quite easy but I can barely win a fight on the lowest difficulty. I love fighters and it's on my to do list but it's so demoralising that I can't ever bring myself to play it for any length of time. One day...
Ferrari 355 Challenge
The lights turn green and off I go. I was pretty good at GT2 so I could probably be a racing driver in real life cus that game's like total realism. Then I realise that I can't even go round the first corner and the reality of how hard this game is sets in. I'm not really into racing games so it never really bothered me that much (I find Forza 4 too hard, Driver is about my limit) but seeing friends of mine who are made about racing games struggle with this said it all.
Defender
It's really hard isn't it. We all know it and we all know that if we were as good at games as we like to think we are we'd be able to play it. But we can't.
Metal Slug 3
When you watch the videos on You Tube it becomes clear that it's possible to learn all the patterns and 1cc the game but playing it casually makes it impossible. It's a shame in a way as it looks amazing, has some nice level design, a great art style and is pure fun but after a while the constant dying starts to grate. Pretty similar to Contra: Hard Corps on the Mega Drive really, the difficulty spoils it.

Just thought of another bastard hard game I played recently on the Sega Mega Drive Collection: Comix Zone.
Why the hell does it take 200 hits to take down one, single, baddie? why!? I played Comix Zone years ago on the pc but thought it was down to the control scheme that I was struggling. Upon playing the game again recently it's just not a good game.
The wiki says it has "cult status".
Pff...
All copies of the game need to be burnt.

Speaking of the DC, I'll add Ecco the Dolphin. **** THAT GAME. It's the most poorly design heap of crap in the DC library - well, maybe next to fighting force. Stunning looking game, but insanely difficult to control ecco in any sort of accurate fashion.

A lot of classic games were hard because they were broken and you couldn't save.
I think the hardest game I've played is Bayou Billy because its broken as fook. I couldn't even get past the first wave of enemies. I'm also rather proud of the fact I managed to finish Maximum Carnage on the MD because thats one hard game.
AoF 2 I own on AES and I did beat it. The only way to beat the AI is by out cheaping them with the same move over and over. This is a staple for SNK games as I can 1CC AoF 1 and FF1 by cheaping the AI too (but those are much easier to beat than AoF2).Last edited by saturn-gamer; 14-04-2013, 20:30.
