I'd be more disappointed if Sony had done this. I was never getting a new Xbox anyway. Sony's platform has the stuff I want mostly.

I'm gonna put my 46" tv in the third bedroom along with the PC, hook up some old consoles through one of those devices that makes old games look good on new TVs and play all the old games I never played before.

I'm in the undecided category although there is a part of me that is thinking I may skip the big consoles altogether this coming gen. I'm almost exclusively a handheld gamer these days anyway and I have missed so many big games and, actually, it turns out I'm cool with that.

The only one reason I would think I should get one of the new consoles is that this reluctance to take the plunge and the feeling that they are no longer catering to me may well be one massive sign that I am getting old. I'll get left behind and one day will have my kids rolling their eyes at me while they try to teach me to play some new game.

I'm not getting one. Modern western made games (which is 90% of the games days) don't feel like games anymore to me. They seem to be obsessed with trying to recreate reality. The reason I bought a 360 was to play ssf2thdr online, I held out for a few years because nothing interested me. Everything that comes out seems to be a sport game, driving, or a 3D run-about game that you just idly jab the attack button and if you hit them more than they hit you then you progress and sandbox games I have genuinely fallen asleep playing. They bore the tits off me! Also the difficulty of the so called AAA games that come out today seem to require very little skill or thinking outside of the box to progress, they seem to be designed for anyone to complete. This isn't how I like my games. I want to earn my progression and get punished for bad play. If a game is too easy then what's the point playing?
I've tried to like modern AAA releases but I just can't enjoy them. Example: the new Tomb Raider is a shadow of the first game, completely forgettable gaming experience. Not once was I really challenged or punished for a mistake. If I died I was just respawned 5 seconds before. Sure it looks 10000% nicer than previous games but where is the soul and challenge of the first game, no thought required, but for some reason it gets 10/10. The first TR was a masterpiece. BioShock - Infinate: how this game got 10/10 I'll never know! Strip away the story and nice gfx and its a substandard FPS at best. Why are games judged souly on their story and gfx all of a sudden? It doesn't even feel like I'm playing the game half the time, it's just an interactive movie that I'm kinda playing. I've really tried to like this gen but I've been left feeling cold. Saying that, there have been a few diamonds in the rough that I've liked, Portal 2 blew my mind and I really enjoyed Braid but apart from that. Modern games don't feel magical anymore like they used to and I think this is mainly due to the lack of Japanese developers, and that's really sad. It doesn't feel like the same hobby I loved growing up. And no, its not the 'rose tinted glasses' effect happening here. I still go back to the old games of the late 80's/90's and they're a breath of fresh air after playing games from the past few years, and they still give me a rush of excitement and danger that I don't feel with modern games. I'm gonna stick to my 8/16/32 bit console games and Arcade games from now on when games were games! Not effing interactive movie/simulation of real life..

        God I'm old!

Not pre-ordering either at the moment, anyone would be mad to do so and needs psychiatric help. E3 may change that slightly, and as long as M$ explain exactly how all this buying and selling of games is going to work, then I can't see any reason not to get one. Same will go for the PS4 too.

In the end its always been a three horse race and there is room in my budget (big redundancy pay coming by then), not sure there is room under the TV though. But I will be going with what I know, and that's you don't trust Sony as far as you can throw them.

At least we know where M$ stands with all of this, regardless of whether you agree with those decisions or not. Sony are being their usual sneaky bastards trying not to commit to anything.

It's true, if you preorder a PS4 or Xbox One you need to seek a psychiatrist immediately.

            Wait. wat?

i may end up buying one for the sake of playing Halo 5 and Forza 6. but i will buy much less games if the DRM **** also requires single player content being connected to an online account to actually be playable. i really would love to know that i can play my Halo 5 offline - just in case Xbox Live shuts down one day or, more likely, M$ being fully chinese owned.

Hopefully so, there's little for them to gain by restricting single player only gamers so much and there surely has to be some caveat for offline gamers. It's why I call BS on cloud based processing, how are devs supposed to utilise that when they can't be assured all owners are online at the required times in the game it needs to process. Reminds of the BS surrounding the possibilities of owning a big hard drive for 360, completely mitigated by the Core model. Just talking fluff to try and have something sound impressive.

At the moment given what we know ... not in general ...

Definitely, it's such a relief to know that the leaked information that had been denied actually ended up actually being true in the end. I'm so please it ended that way for all of us, thank you Microsoft for being honest this.

Clearly, sneaky bastards in the purest sense of the wording by....actually no, you've completely lost me now. They've been sneaky bastards by doing what now? By not actually doing anything?

The filthy, lousy, cheap, non doing anything, murdering *****!!!!!

Quick, everybody here phone somebody else and report them for stuff and things, they can't be allowed to get away this sort of belligerence in a civilised world!!

Sorry, forgot about the actual question.

No reason to think pre-ordering anything this far from launch but Microsoft really have managed to surpass the PS3 launch debacle so far so unless they have somebody sensible come on stage at E3 and openly say "I'm sorry, we got it all wrong, let's start again" they aren't going to change my mind.

The slightly worrying thing is that nothing they've and done so far is really a surprise if you look at the changes they've made over the past couple of years on the 360.

Going into the last generation I felt that Microsoft were pretty much spot on and Sony were walking in the opposite direction repeatedly shouting "Rainman".

Over the generation both companies appear to have switched completely and they're still moving in opposing directions but the understanding of what it their rather large established makrket has been passed like a baton as they briefly met in the middle a couple of years ago.

Looks like a PC, has PC-like architecture but also has ridiculous, anti-consumer DRM? Think I'll save my money and build a PC instead.

Best and worst thing we now know about each console?

                          Xbo
Best - new kinect looks amazing
Worst - no borrowing of games

                          Ps4
                          Best - super powerful
Worst - no games shown thay pique my interest

Region-free gaming is the big draw for me though not sure if any of them will offer that functionality.

Overall the Onebox doesn't interest me - the big drawback is the non game borrowing though I think I have a way around it.

Yes but Sony learned so much from the 599 debacle, and swore it would never happen again, maybe in 3 or 4 years time M$ will come out and say it was a mistake to chase the casuals and p1$$ off your core demographic customers, but now its full steam ahead to nowhere.

To be fair mate, I don't think either company has really announced anything in the way of games yet. We just know Sony are more welcoming to indies and their main devs all have something lined up. I just hope for gaming's sake it's not more dudez with guns, I'm bored of that stuff...

I'm secretly hoping for Last Guardian as a PS4 launch game and that would pretty much make me happy!
