It's about the same as PS5 MAU - so yes, I'd say it was a pretty good number.

Yeah; I mean it's one of the weird things about VR. Loads of people say it's unproven, which is certainly true - but they've sold more Quest headsets than MS have sold Series Xboxes.

I really hope we see the Apple VR headset in June as rumoured just so I can hand out cones of shame to relevant parties.

OK all, it's on - Apple's VR headset will be at their event on June 5th (or in the days that follow, as the event runs for several).

It's emerged that prominent VR news website journalists, such as UploadVR, RoadToVR and CNET's VR specialist reporter, have all been given invites to the event and asked by Apple PR, specifically, to attend in-person. These people normally don't get invited even to the remote version of such events.

So if the Apple headset doesn't get shown, it certainly was intended to be shown and the absence is a last-minute swerve.

Additionally, Quest users who have updated have noticed that apps now list Quest 3 as one of the supported platforms on the store. Reasonable chance we'll see more of that on June 1st at Meta's gaming event.

But will it have an external battery ?

Powered by the new M3 processor. As Apple seems to like putting its own processor design in everything now, I'd suspect that's likely (and would probably make it the most powerful stand-alone VR headset on the market). Just lacking all the software.

The rumour is that it has 2xM2 chips.

I have absolutely no idea where that rumour comes from though. But it would still make it by far the most powerful (and expensive) headset on the market.

I very much doubt it has 2xM2 chips, that's not an architecture Apple has used since Power Macs and if they're not providing Macbooks with that configuration, it's massively massively unlikely it would make it into a VR headset.

With rumous of a $2000-2500 price tag (or even higher) though, that'd pay for dual SoC.

Yeah, it's a weird one. The only precedent I can think of is that the DS's architecture had two processors, one to power each display.

I'm expecting them to do some M2 derivative but with a double the graphics cores. Even though it will likely be announced at the WWDC it'll be a while before it ships given it is just being introduced to the developers that will possibly be making software it.

                          Asking the real questions.

                          *dusts dunce hat down*

Could be a few of us donning it if the latest rumours are correct...

Just to add to this - it'll be in the keynote on the 5th, rather than the days that follow (provided it's there, which I think it will be). The rest of the event is the actual stuff for developers, new product launches are in the dog and pony show on stage

Think I'm gonna have to sell my Quest Pro controllers, and sharpish.

It looks almost certain now that the Quest 3 is going to come with them by default.

Are you sure on that? The hands-on that was reported recently showed similar controllers, but they lack the cameras the Quest Pro controllers have (and presumable then, the SoC inside them too), so they're probably not going to track as well: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsl...adset-li7h3suy

The Bloomberg article could be wrong I suppose.

It apparently is wrong. There's been a fair bit of stuff passed around which suggests the person was using a prototype unit and misunderstood, or simply didn't know enough about VR to give a proper account. For example, they said that the display experience isn't much better than the Quest 2, but it's widely thought the Q3 is going to use pancake lenses like the Quest Pro, and the quality jump of those is absolutely phenomenal (you have 'edge to edge' clarity, i.e. you don't have that always-present blur that all other sets have). There are a few other bits floating around also which make people doubt their account.

I strongly suspect this because the Q3's leaked CAD data shows fewer cameras, and the controllers have to be tracked by something. No-one has developed spatial awareness tech prior to now that could do tracking via other means in an inside-out manner. I'd love to be surprised though.
