I agree. I like the ideas behind it but the actual reality of the shipping product is just dumb. They screwed up by releasing it.

If they sold 400,000 at a minimum of $3500 (and I'll bet a lot of people were paying for Apple Care), they took a revenue of at least $1.4 billion , $3.1 billion if it's closer to the 900K projection. By comparison, Quest 2 at 20 mil units is somewhere in the region $6 billion.

Yeah, a lot of people on Reddit lamented a lack of PSVR2 or PCVR release.

I've got to assume that the VR version was in some respect funded by Meta, because Futurlab make games for numerous platforms and while it's not like it's no work to port a Quest title to PC at least, it feels like the difficult bit's probably done.

Meta increased its losses in the Oct-Dec 2024 quarter to $4.96bn, its total losses on VR in 2024 came up to $17.72bn - an increase on the $16.12bn lost in 2023.

Meta overall made $60bn in profit in 2024 to Dec (an increase over 2023), they're in this for the long haul, they aren't bleeding out.

I'm curious where they currently see the investment going. It's a hell of commitment, even for Meta given the proportion of revenue they're sacrificing for it - yet VR momentum is moving away more than its moving toward being the endgame. I'm more than happy for them to continue doing it, despite how scummy the company is I imagine VR would be in a much worse position if they weren't pushing it so hard, but it definitely feels like VR is Meta's personal 'Xbox'. An endless initiative that never delivers on the original ambition

There's a leaked memo doing the rounds that their VR revenue is expected to have increased by 40% this year by the end of the FY, even though their losses are still high.

Good stuff, at the moment they're close to being the only way we're getting stuff like Batman Arkham etc so keeping the incentive there for them to contribute to bringing out more VR tentpoles is key, especially as the handful of other headset makers are hardware orientated.
