The media stuff doesn't mean anything to me.

If I want to watch something on Netflix then the PS4 can do that but if I want to watch softsubbed anime mkv files I'll plug my laptop into my TV via HDMI.

As for custom soundtracks; never used it on Xbox or 360 so I don't intend to start now.

God you all sound like me, whinging whining. Waaa the PS4 looks amazing but i can't listen to crap sounds like music played in a metal tin, and play it through my headphones so everybody can hear it while playing BF3, i'd say thank god, no more crap music to listen to.

After both Sony and Microsoft have bent over backwards to promote their respective formats as all-encompassing media hubs for the past 8 years, I'm not convinced that it's fair to say that people are 'whining' when finding that these features are no longer present. Sony and Microsoft themselves created the precedent that these are standard features.

I have no use for these features myself and will never use them. But that doesn't change the fact that other people do have a use for them.

BUT (and it's a big But) You get fantastic media capabilities, some awesome 1st party support, the best designed controller on the planet, the most robust online cloud provider on the planet and a company that will buy exclusive rights to the best games.

'Awesome first party support' only applies if you really like shooting games. The controller is completely subjective. Most robust online...maybe. 'Exclusive rights' to the 'best games'? What does that even mean? You can't even buy exclusive rights to games any more, they're too expensive to develop to not make them cross platform. If you want an exclusive game for your system you have to make it yourself.

The media capabilities do seem better on the Xbox though. The lack of MP3 playback on the PS4 is bizarre. Both of them should be pushing for all the apps they can get too, an expanded amount of non-game software would be great and only serve to make both systems more of a living room hub. I'm talking stuff like Spotify, Soundcloud, Picasa, Flickr....anything that would be nice to consume on a TV, particularly if it's socially oriented like those four.

Nintendo just did all that with TW101 and Bayonetta 2.

I honest to god believe that NTSC-uk is one of the places that Pixels and AA is way higher than raw gameplay and enjoyment for most members.

But if im splashing nearly half a grand on a console i defiantly want 1080P, or why buy a machine that only does what my PS3 & 360 do now, and music through a console isn't music , yes im an audiophile snob.

It's a trade off. You can either have loads more detail on screen at sub 1080p resolutions, or have a little extra detail at 1080p. Either way, they are doing a whole lot more than your PS3 and 360 do now.

Personally for the type of games I play, I'm more interested in 60fps and lots of detail / AI / gameplay than outright resolution.

Of course. But games consoles have changed and anything they don't offer over previous systems is a step back for me. Thank god I do more pc gaming nowadays.
I'm steering well clear of both new consoles I think. My pc is more than capable of handling most stuff at the second rate fps that these new consoles are apparently offering, while my wii u is offering my genuine gaming gems. I'll be waiting for substantial price drops. This is the first time I'm not buying at launch sincethe mega drive.

We can't have it both ways, though. We can't dismiss efforts to do new things with gaming such as motion control and controller-free gaming as mere gimmicks that distract resources from 'proper' gaming, yet simultaneously berate the PS4 and XBox One as being too conservative and doing nothing new (especially with neither platform being released yet, and basing this view purely on the launch titles).

1080p is perfectly possible with the new consoles and we will see games utilise this, Some developers may opt for a lower resolution but with more effects, just like developers also did on the 16-bit consoles.

I meant if you like the MS franchises, XB1 is for you. I also believe that if MS is losing the hardware battle they will purchase exclusive titles like Titanfall.

I've never berated the wii. I have an issue with a new generation that feels like a stepping stone to a generation that is unlikely to ever appear. I've never been more disillusioned with gaming as I've been this past year and so far, neither new console has shown me anything that couldn't be done on a pc. Consoles are just becoming **** for me. I'll stick with my pc ans vita going forward for the immediate future as there is nothing in either launch line-up that feels like it's running on a next gen console.

It was until companies like Microsoft and Sony decided they were pushing media hubs rather than just games consoles. Nobody had these expectations until they created them and pushed hard for them.

I seem to remember both the Mega CD and PC Eng CD Rom offering very good CD music playback . The CDI, Saturn , allowing users to view pictures and films on the consoles, surf the web and so on and well Commodore tried to multi media years back with the CD TV too . I think many gaming corps had a view to Multi Media functions for their consoles

Wii u with it's tablet controller seems like innovation to me. I think that the potential of new games on both PC&Console are being held back by the fact that the current 360/PS3 have so much market share, that they demand cross gen games that the design holds back the potential.

For those without a PC; I think the chance to experience 64 player Battlefield, with 60fps and massive maps will seem like a whole new world on XB1/PS4. I really do think this is a huge change from 24 player games on smaller maps and 30fps.

Anyway, hopefully new ideas and game mechanics will encourge you to regain your confidence in console gaming.

As it stands PC is looking like the lead platform for new games, but I am sure there will be exlusive console titles that will deliver in the future.

For the launch, I don't have a BF4 capable PC, so Playstation 4 + Battlefield and KZ will hopefully be fun. I'm also really keen to see The Witness.

I appreciate it's not revolutionary, but the prospect of PC quality BF with a robust friends list and on my 50" TV does have me excited.
