6600GT ran **** hot. It struggled with Half Life 2 a bit at points - ravenholm and the part where you had to fight to the muesum. It also basically melted when I tried the first Far Cry with the shader update.

I upgraded to a 7900GT not soon after and that is the best card I've ever bought in terms of price/performance. Utterly brilliant!!!

Crysis 2 I have installed but haven't played it yet. Surprised you say it looks worse. Even with the dx11 patch?

Was referring to texture resolution really.

Had a 7950GT after my 6800GT. Good times.

Man alive, speedy. I recall this costing a fortune.

Oh I bought it after the 8800GTX was out. Maybe around 07?

Also you might be thinking of the 512MB 7900GTX? Those were silly money.

Then in 08 I bought myself a 9800GTX+ with my first pay cheque.

Wanted a 9800GTX so bad. I think this was the time ATI sneaked past performance wise with the 4870.

I haven't upgraded for years as it's just not worth it as I hardly ever play now - last 3 years I've logged 20 hours or something in Steam.

On a 6870 atm and I think that'll do fine for the games I keep buying.

            ... and not playing.

Got a 3570k with a 6850 currently. More than enough for Tera.

Only real big pc release that I thought was a proper "big" release was Starcraft2. Made me go straight out and get it. My mac only has 256mb graphics card, 4gig ram and 2.4 duel core, runs averagely but loved it from start to finish, amazing game.

There was a time when new Windows releases were greeted with a certain amount of excitement. Nowerdays it seems to be more dread about how good the current drivers are for the new OS, which games are no longer compatible or run slower, or what crazy features or changes Microsoft have added that nobody asked for and nobody wants.

The last time I remember a real "launch" of this manner on PC was World of Warcraft, because at the time I knew many people (and spoke to many others) who were actually buying PCs just to play it.

I had a friend who worked for MS once, and I mentioned this to him about the "ribbon" features of the new Office, which most users hated. He said to me,

You know when you get asked by Word if you want to send data about your usage to MS, right? And you click "no"? And you're an advanced user? Well all the beginner users click "yes".
