Fair point Brad, it was more than a little knee-jerk at the last comment.

Lebowski: I don't touch my Wii VC for that reason too. At least being able to mirror the TV on the pad was a step in the right direction. Most of my VC is on my Japanese Wii, which is currently making sure my sock draw looks full.

I can understand Wiimote specific games needing you to use the wiimote, that's obvious but neither of the WiiU controllers are suitable for use in place of a Classic Pro for Wii games? That's just lazy isn't it? Or are there buttons/features of the Classic Pro that aren't present on either the gamepad or the wiiu pro controller?
nope all buttons present and accounted for its just bloody Nintendo at there finest charging ?1.50 to update your wii vc game to wiiu is a joke especialy in the light of what Sony has done with Flower and Flow on the ps4.

Even though I MADE the choice to buy the extra controller, just to PLAY Sin and Punishment (best game on N64) I need to have a Wiimote and Wii Classic Pro. That is about ?30 in extra controllers I HAVE to buy before I buy the sodding game. This is lunacy.

If you make the old game available, then make them playable with the Wii U controllers FFS. Rant over.

The number of controllers you need to fully utilise the Wii U's features is patently ridiculous, especially considering half of them look the same and have the same buttons.

Kryss you say that Jim G knew 'full well' that the Pro controller wouldn't work with everything, but that's probably not going to be clear to most people, unless they are absorbing and memorising information about games on a daily basis like most of us on here. And if you disagree with that, you must be named Shigeru Miyamoto.

It's another area where the Wii U, as much as I love it in so many ways, just misses the mark hardware-wise for me. Like the terrible stock gamepad battery life, resistive screen and awful eShop app (I think it might literally just be an HTML page). Oh and the way that most of the apps look crap on a TV because they're designed as tablet-style apps for the gamepad. Why duplicate what's on the screen to the TV for these apps?

It all just feels a bit 'beta'. However being able to jump into Miiverse and the actually surprisingly decent web browser without quitting a game is great and does feel like a step up from PS3/360.

Juggling controllers is one of my main problems with the WiiU - that, and that the sensor bar really does not get on with the glass table in my front room. Still though, I've been playing the UK version Rhythym Tengoku (which is brilliant) on mine recently and it's making me want to go back and play a bunch of Wii games... to the point where I'm considering buying a Japanese one so that I can ditch my old Wii.

Jim g: I can't justify any further disagreement with you, the points you make are completely valid and the fanboy in me just reacted.

The Wii had so many attachments and controllers (I have 3 Classic Controllers I'll probably never be able to shift and 2 CCPros that I wouldn't want to). The assumption on Nintendo's part that everyone buying a WiiU would already have peripherals from the Wii is flawed. I want to be able to play my VC games from the Wii on the pad with no other controllers. I guess that'll never happen though.

@Kryss - Hey, it happens to us all :-)

The real issue is that we all know how easy it would be for Ninty to solve this problem. FFS, you can play PS1 games that run on a PS3 with a Vita remotely attached. Technology can solve this!

Yeah, it's part of the Wii U's problematic positioning. They based the entire system around the idea that their previous system was still fresh in the mind for most people, 6 years after its release. That works sometimes (see: PS2) but for a console whose early sales were based so heavily around a gimmick and a pack-in game, it was never going to be the case. Most people (non core gamers) had probably packed away, sold or lost their original Wii gear by the time Wii U rolled around.

I believe that there could have been a much greater amount of demand for a new Nintendo system had it been positioned better, but instead they billed it as an upgraded Wii - and completely misjudged public appetite for for such a product.

Totally agree. Nintendo thought the Wii gravy train would roll on and on.. but the mass market had little interest in staying on board for the Wii U.

Nintendo, with the Wii, had once again built a strong rep with the public, so they could have taken advantage of that.. by creating a console to truly compete with the Xbox One and the PS4. If Nintendo had gone down that route and given the machine a completely new name, the media would have been really excited.. and that would have grabbed the public's attention. The Wii U hasn't had the media drooling over it, and it certainly hasn't caught the attention of the mass market. Nintendo took a risk based that seems to have backfired on them.

Of course, the Wii U can still sell, because big name Nintendo games will always attract attention. I don't think it will ever compete strongly with the Xbox One and PS4. It's a shame, because I've always loved Nintendo products.

Even though I love my Wii U I do hope that Nintendo give it a short life or bring a more powerful console out to compete with the XBO and PS4 and run them side by side.

I know deep down inside though that its not going to happen as the stream of games is slow for just the Wii U it would be almost none existent if they had to support 2 home consoles.

If they did however in the future bring out something more powerful, they are in a catch 22. I can see only nintendo supporting the extra power and 3rd parties doing conversions for them all and not using the extra power.

I suppose I should be glad I'm still playing the likes of Mario and Co. on a nintendo console. If the Wii U was as powerful though and featured blu-ray I would have placed bets on it being my only console as long as 3rd parties developed for it. Nintendo's own IP is much stronger than Sony's/Microsofts.

Why not have a go at the fact that so few PC games that support joy pads don't support PS3 pads? That would surely be easier to fix. Glorious PC master race? Load of bollocks more like.

And how come the PS4/Xbox One gets a seperate thread for negativity yet we still get people like you who don't even own a Wii U coming in here moaning about it?

                            Comment

And whose job would it be to allow Sony Controllers to work on PCs? We're talking about Nintendo not making their own controllers work on their own system. Why would Sony want their pads to work on a PC?

Because that thread is the Next Gen thread of negativity, created when the XBO and PS4 were about due for launch. It's a joke thread anyway. Why are you getting so cross? Go and make a WiiU Negativity thread if you like. I moan about lots of things I don't own. I moan about things I do own too. Killzone Shadowfall is bloody terrible for example.

I didn't say anything about Sony controllers, but 360 joy pads are supported by various games, but PS3 controllers are supported by hardly any when there's hardly any difference between them. And Valve are pushing the use of joy pads on Steam, so they could and should be pushing both PS3 and 360 controllers for one.

And it's still a lot cheaper to buy a controller or two for the Wii U to play Wii games on it than to buy a PS3 or 360 as you have to do if you own a PS4 or Xbox One, but not their predecessors and want to play their predecessors games.
