The sad part is, if I was to personally rank Nintendo consoles in terms of how much I liked the lineups they ultimately received over their lifespans, despite the success it enjoyed I would rank Wii bottom of the pile

If Nintendo were to suddenly understand the market they could clean up. As Deuteros says, bring out a bunch of interesting stuff so that it becomes everyone's second console and eventually outsells ps4 and xbone. They won't do this though because as Nakamura says, they are utterly clueless about every aspect of the game industry. 3DS is doing well because Sony ballsed up more than Nintendo did, not because 3DS is an incredible handheld console design.

Not totally convinced by my own last sentence but I think there's at least an element of truth in there.

Ninty got monster hunter, that was it for Sonys handheld, with pokemon and dragon quest, not to mention other jrpgs, Japan made their mind up on the handheld front before vita came out.

It does seem a little unfair to Sony. They must be wondering what happened. They gave gamers the handheld that they all said they wanted and then everyone bought a Nintendo lol.

I feel Nintendo are currently beyond repair, certainly in the next ten years. Too many people consider their games for children. This started with the Cube in a small way and went full blown with the Wii.

When you consider how twee their games have become, it's no wonder their appeal is limited.
Their older output was so diverse.

Someone mentioned Pilotwings Resort. What a load of rubbish that way.
Could have been an awesome multi event sim with realistic graphics and still fun gameplay. Instead they made another game to solidify their kiddy image.

                  .
Its not just the child image really . Lots of kids now like to play Fifa, COD online and Nintendo just lost too much ground and didn't spend the money or put in the resources in the OnLine and then to follow that up with tech that was way behind its rivals now for 2 generations has saw Nintendo hemorrhage 3rd party support . The Nintendo faithful might not like them and slag them off, but kids and a hell of lot of gamers like playing the COD's, The Fifa's and GTA and Nintendo just don't offer that , or if they do, the Nintendo versions offer sub bar versions way behind on graphics and On-Line features

Valid point TA. It's the uncool image perhaps. Nintendo games are still popular but aren't 'cool'.

Fifa and CoD are. They sell systems. Fifa 15 sales already huge.

When have Nintendo ever been cool?

As a kid I had a Cube and loved Nintendo games. All of my friends were playing Grand Theft Auto and Fifa. I don't think much has changed really, except that kids also defer to Android/iOS devices which hits Nintendo harder than anyone else.

In this day and age it's "cool" to chop wood, dig holes and craft chairs in video games and keep doing it for 2000 hours.

                        God I miss the 90's.

I don't think its a cool image . Just for many gamers when they want to play FIFA or COD online they just automically think of the PSN or XBox Live . Nintendo trouble is its lack of 3rd party support and the lack of games coming out for the Wii U (not that Nintendo don't make good games or there aren't any good games on the Wii U ) and Nintendo have totally screwed up on-line side of things and its really hurt them .

Nintendo decided to forge their own path a while ago and they're still doing it. It's not the path most people tread but it's there as an alternative route. I'm glad it's there; I like the choice. Most people will pick a motorway to get where they want to go as quick as they can but I sometimes like to take the scenic b-roads. At some point though I worry that less and less people will choose to use this path and it'll become overgrown with weeds and the carcases of dead animals (I'm talking about games here) that died on that path because there weren't enough travelers (I mean gamers here) to feed them (not enough people bought the niche games) and now I realise this analogy has gone to a weird place and I need some helping coming up with a conclusion.

I really like today's system update, the ability to create folders was much needed and the ability to colour code them is fantastic. I've got everything in 4 folders now and coloured them the 4 colours on a SNES controller (Red = NES VC, Yellow = SNES VC, Green = GBA VC and Blue = Utilities i.e everything else). Looks very cool next to my Mario Kart 8 Disc icon Definite improvement as is the more modern and solid looking "Home Button Screen" they've got now, gives the console a more polished feel.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 (SNES) is on VC this week. I didn't really care for SF2 but I liked Alpha 3 on Dreamcast, is the SNES port Alpha 2 any good?

it's a long time since I played the SNES version but I remember it being a bit ropey, like it was too big an ask of the system.
