If you've not spent years on the series, don't decide yet which weapon to main, try them all and see how they feel. Be prepared to change weapon depending on the monster too, and ALWAYS be aware of which elements they are weak against and swap out for one of that type. This is one reason why bowgunning can be an advantage as you can almost always get a gun that uses particular elemental rounds.

The only downside to gunning is that you need an entirely different armour and the defense is <1/2 that of a blademaster.
