    Irrational Games RIP

Bit of a news shocker this one

    Taken from the homepage

    A Message From Ken Levine

When Jon Chey, Rob Fermier and I founded Irrational Games seventeen years ago, our mission was to make visually unique worlds and populate them with singular characters.
We built Rapture and Columbia, the Von Braun and The Rickenbacker, the Freedom Fortress and some of the nastiest basements a SWAT team ever set foot into. We created Booker and Elizabeth, the Big Daddy and the Little Sister, MidWives and ManBot. In that time, Irrational has grown larger and more successful than we could have conceived when we began our three-person studio in a living room in Cambridge, MA. It?s been the defining project of my professional life.

Now Irrational Games is about to roll out the last DLC for BioShock Infinite and people are understandably asking: What?s next?

Seventeen years is a long time to do any job, even the best one. And working with the incredible team at Irrational Games is indeed the best job I?ve ever had. While I?m deeply proud of what we?ve accomplished together, my passion has turned to making a different kind of game than we?ve done before. To meet the challenge ahead, I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers. In many ways, it will be a return to how we started: a small team making games for the core gaming audience.

I am winding down Irrational Games as you know it. I?ll be starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavor at Take-Two. That is going to mean parting ways with all but about fifteen members of the Irrational team. There?s no great way to lay people off, and our first concern is to make sure that the people who are leaving have as much support as we can give them during this transition.

Besides financial support, the staff will have access to the studio for a period of time to say their goodbyes and put together their portfolios. Other Take-Two studios will be on hand to discuss opportunities within the company, and we?ll be hosting a recruiting day where we?ll be giving 3rd party studios and publishers a chance to hold interviews with departing Irrational staff.*

    What?s next?

In time we will announce a new endeavor with a new goal: To make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable. To foster the most direct relationship with our fans possible, we will focus exclusively on content delivered digitally.

When I first contemplated what I wanted to do, it became very clear to me that we were going to need a long period of design. Initially, I thought the only way to build this venture was with a classical startup model, a risk I was prepared to take. But when I talked to Take-Two about the idea, they convinced me that there was no better place to pursue this new chapter than within their walls. After all, they?re the ones who believed in and supported BioShock in the first place.

Thanks to Irrational and 2K?s passion in developing the games, and the fans who believe in it, BioShock has generated retail revenues of over a half billion dollars and secured an iconic place in gaming. I?m handing the reins of our creation, the BioShock universe, to 2K so our new venture can focus entirely on replayable narrative. If we?re lucky, we?ll build something half as memorable as BioShock.

We do our best to update an FAQ in this space as questions come in.

    -Ken Levine

Terrible new and another blow to the industry.

Sad truth here is Bioshock Infinite cost too much to make and didn't make enough money back.

      Another one bites the dust.
And gamers wonder why we are left with nothing but yearly rehashes.
The sales required to sustain a AAA franchise are barely possible for most.

And of course, how much money did Candy Crush Saga make this week?

Very sad news for those who have lost their jobs.

Asura, as you mention Candy Crush, they are trying to go public in America, with a valuation in the billions. They are making $10M profit a week, and something like over 80% of that comes from Candy Crush.

The I.P.O. filing laid bare how much of a moneymaker Candy Crush has been for its parent. The company said that its profit surged significantly last year, to $567.6 million from $7.8 million
King Digital Entertainment, the maker of the addictive puzzle game Candy Crush Saga, filed on Tuesday to list its shares on the New York Stock Exchange.

This sounds a bit silly just going on that Ken Levine message. It sounds like he doesn't want to play anymore so nobody gets to play. At least Bioshock can continue and I would hope many of those who lose their jobs here end up on those Bioshock teams but I can't really see why this couldn't have been done with Irrational's structure with Levine going off to do his vanity projects with a smaller team. His message is all "I".

Well if I'm honest I've generally found the Bioshock series overrated so perhaps not such a bad thing. Very for the people whom have lost their jobs, hopefully they'll be swiftly back on their feet.

Find it weird that he's making it sound like it was just his decision when surely there was an element of corporate necessity to it. If it was really just a case of him wanting to do something new with a small staff, what was the issue in them doing that and not closing the rest of the studio? Still, don't think it is a great sign if one of the smartest, more artistically appealing AAA games of recent years hasn't been able to secure a team's future. The times they are a-changin'.

Irrational is owned by Take-Two, one of the biggest publishers out there, so I don't believe for a moment that it can be Levine's decision to close the studio, but rather Take-Two's.

We can only really speculate his reasons for quitting with Irrational and probably a lot of things are kept hush-hush because they are important business things. Maybe he got burned out churning out BioShock after BioShock.

Just wait and see when Levine announces a new project on Kickstarter. I called it first.

Yep, you guys are right. It can't be just his decision.

First time im going to criticise Ken, talking about through your toys out the pram. Why didn't he just resign and let the others maybe to stay, he can't be the only guy in irrational that has ideas on a story or how to make a game, the old team did a pretty good job of bioshock 2 without Ken and key members. COD & Candy Crush to look forward to for the next couple of years, Oh the joys.

I hope Sony pick him and his team up to work on internal projects, fantastic studio.

Yeah, Bubbles, even your nemesis Molyneux came over as less of a primadonna artiste when he left Lionhead. But I guess folks are right and there's moneymen, not artistic ambitions, behind this decision.

You don't know what happened so don't jump your guns.

Like I already said, Irrational is owned by Take-Two Interactive, not Ken Levine, we hardly know the real reasons behind the closing of the studio.

I can understand very well his reasons for wanting to do something new and original with a smaller team and budget. When you're making big money games like BioShock you're definitely not allowed to do what you want, there are strict restrictions and no doubt what the publisher (Take-Two in this case) says goes.

It must also be hell of a lot of pressure managing a game the scope of BioShock Infinite, with a budget of millions of dollars, but of course the Internet know-it-alls know that he just "threw his toys out of the pram".

Edit: There are talks about Infinite costing over $100 million dollars and it was in development for 5 years. It has sold about 4 million copies to date so that would mean that it wasn't a huge financial success and probably the main reason for the closure of Irrational.

That sums it up in one what happened Infinite cost well over $100 to make and market, when you have a 200 strong development studio working on one game for 5 years it doesn't take much to do the maths. Infinite didn't make it's money back despite having good sales, which is a big worry for the cost of next gen games.
