Amazed this thread is only 3 pages long. I think Netherrealm have gone above and beyond on this.

All the new characters look awesome. Story mode looks as if it's gonna be even more epic than MK9. JASON VOORHEES. All the old characters have never looked better. Variations for every character. Challenge towers than change hourly, daily, weekly.

There hasn't been on thing i have seen about MKX that i haven't liked and they just keep impressing me more and more, i haven't been so excited for a new fighter since KOF13. I can't wait.

That may be, but my opinion on MK has never swayed away from how it was in the mid-90s - it was a bit of daft fun, a playable joke and a reasonable fighter with over-the-top gore for laughs and controversy.

Nothing since MK2 has really make much of an impact on me, and the joke has long since worn thin.

I've been out of MK since the second game, only getting glimpses of what developers tried to do with spinoffs and additional mechanics to the core series.
To me it seems that people are more excited for the non-MK characters that will make into this rather than for the game itself, and that after rebooting the series with 9 (was it nine?), Netherrealm are quickly lapsing into cramming as many gimmicks as they can into MK, rather than keeping it simple.
Story wise, is MKX another rebbot? Is Johnny Cage in the army now? Married to Sonya? With a daughter? When that did happen?

The story isn't a reboot, it follows directly on from MK9, which was a reboot - and a great one! I've recently gotten back into it and been playing it loads with a mate. Such a fun game. I'm not an aficionado of fighting games so I've no doubt that its slower gameplay and simple move executions compare poorly with the titans of the genre, but I'm personally a big fan. It's just lots of fun and it really felt like they poured lots of love into MK9. It looks to be the same way for MKX, but bigger and better this time.

As regards Cage and Sonya having a child, I believe that occurred between 9 and X. I really like the MK characters and lore actually, they're so naff and 90s but at the same time really cool!

Calling it it a playable joke is pretty harsh I reckon, I've had hours and hours of fun with 9. 4 player local in particular is a blast.

I should clarify, that's how I've seen the franchise rather than any specific game. Maybe these new ones are worth a look.

Maybe it's just MK's character design; it had this kind of "darker and edgier" feel, but then the characters themselves seemed a bit daft. Street Fighter's/SNK's characters are a similar slice of 90s ridiculousness, but there's never been any notion that those characters are meant to be taken seriously (which is why films of these things never work out).

I enjoyed 9, but once the story and challenge tower was done I just didn't find the MP enjoyable- it felt a bit cheap- in gameplay and online mechanics not working.

I applaud the amount of single player content though- something other makers need to realise.

I'm going to be giving MKX a go purely out of enjoying MK9 and Injustice but I'm not expecting amazing things from it. Going off the footage out so far the characters still have that ridged, under animated movement to them the series has never developed past. They're usually pretty content heavy though so getting the hours of play out them is easy. As a fighter though I'd put the series comfortably below almost all it's rivals, it's very much in the guilty pleasure cateGORY

yeah always felt the animation felt a bit stiff compared to most fighting games though mk 9 was far better then previous mortal kombat games and they opened up the kombo system right up with far more flexibility

I still feel that the xray move should have been the second bar and the combo breaker the third bar as X ray moves were not often used

Also has anyone noticed with fighting games that they tend to show a lot of the game as it is being developed ?

I seriously can't wait. I loved MK9, loads of interesting content, story and challenge tower we're great. Online definitely wasn't it's strongest suit - but again I enjoyed the modes and still played it for hours...

I hear what's being said about the animation, but overall I think it looks glorious. Even MK9.

                    Bring on April 14th!

Seems interesting that they've toned down the design of the female characters a bit. It always was a bit daft; didn't one of MK's characters fight in a bright pink loincloth and bikini?

I mean Dead or Alive does it, but then it's DoA's thing.

Eh? MK is as tongue in cheek as they come - it takes itself far less seriously than even SF or KoF! There's nothing edgy about it, it's maximum cheese and maximum lolfactor all the way.

Genuinely no idea where you've gotten that impression. Its irreverence is actually one of my fave things about it!

I think it is now. Back when the first games came out, I always thought they were supposed to have a Todd McFarlane-esque "grimdark" feel, something which I've never gotten along with. Then again, I was a kid, so perhaps it was just my impression at the time.

EDIT: My memories of the films may be unfairly influencing my opinion.

I agree this looks good and must be amazing for fans of the series, I never got past the very first game. MK2 ramped things up to ridiculous that I just tuned out. Im surprised Jason Vorhees is getting such a warm reception, maybe he'll be like a Zangief type heavy character. Would've been interesting if the Predator could've made it into this game, it was hinted last year if I remember correctly.

I also agree that SNK and Capcom should take note in regard to Single player based story and development and overall fan service. However this does NOT mean I want to see guest appearances from movie franchises appearing in SFV.

I feel a lot of people skipped MK9 because they thought it was going to continue what the ****ty PS2/Xbox games did and it really didn't

Like others have said MK9 completely rebooted the story and did an amazing job at it, go and pick up the game cheap and play the story, its really fun.

MKX is going to span 25 years from the end of MK9, so that's why we have kids like Cassie, Takashi and Jacqui and descendants like Kung Jin.

Everyone who has gotten their hands on X just says it feels amazing to play, super smooth 60 fps and it just feels fast and natural.

Of course it's still tongue in cheek, look at the designs, look at the fatalities, it's still mental and it's still MK at it's heart as it should be, it's just refined
