No brainer... Super Nintendo... And I have the memories to prove it

This has been a fun poll and a great look back at the 'golden ages' of gaming... Oh how spoilt we were for quality back in the day... As expensive as it was back when the snes came out, it felt so good to experience the magic...

I'm concerned about the trend these days for free entertainment, if I'm honest, and what that'll do to the quality of things like video games.

I mean I subscribe to Netflix, but I freely admit that for the cost (about a fiver a month) I get a ludicrous amount of entertainment; but it clearly isn't paying much to the industry that created it.

Freemium games are the same, for me. Ditto for music streaming. In an era where everything is virtually free and people only pay small microtransactions, could a game like Street Fighter 2 flourish? Or Chrono Trigger? When you're largely guaranteed to make ?20-30 off each consumer, you can afford to make a game or whatever and only sell it to a few hundred thousand people. One of the reasons so many iOS games are bland and inoffensive is because they need literally a hundred million downloads to make a decent return.

Unless any more votes wash in it looks like we have a winner. The 16 bit era and the Super NES had the best launch year

In many ways you could say that SF2's success was microtransaction driven. Putting a coin in an arcade machine is essentially a microtransaction.

I disagree. It may have been to arcade operators, but they bought the machine from Capcom at huge expense. From Capcom's perspective (apart from their few personally run arcades) it was still about selling a product up-front.

That's true. Still, without the popularity of those microtransactions, far fewer operators would have purchased machines.

To the end user the result was the same, they were asked to fork over small amounts for short nuggets of playtime, and that was enough to drive a huge global franchise.

Street Fighter 2 had microtransactions, remember that ?40-60 expansion pack that unlocked the 4 boss characters? Or that update that increased the games speed? Or the second expansion which added 4 characters and 4 backgrounds? Or the other one that then added the speed option back in plus Akuma? What about the redrawn sprites? For the sweet sweet tune of just up to ?316 you could have it all!

They didn't even do a discounted season pass.
