This is Nintendo. They would find a way to make the procedure impossible, retarded, hard and downright painfull.

Possibly requiring a random code obtained from a full moon in October from a sales executive that only works on a Thursday for 4 seconds, but he has no phone or email and appears in a random place in the highlands for those 4 seconds only.

I always say I love my wii u but yesterday I could have thrown it out the window. Wife picked up mario party so I moved it to the main tv, which took ages as the sensor wire is crap and he all in one power block is a pain. First it wouldn't boot up just hung at the Wii U screen and turned off. Took out my smash brothers disk and it booted fine. Then I ended up having the whole controller saga where it turns out mario party 10 is 90% Wiimotes so we only have 1 wiimote and the game pad so could only play 1 mode. Cannot use the pro controller. (Wtf)

It all just felt like a massive chore for me for the first time ever. I even got upset with loading times. /rant over sorry!

Moving a Wii U is a pain. Mine has a power lead, an HDMI cable, an infra-red Wii remote sensor, a Y-Cable for the HDD, a Gamecube Controller Adapter and a charger for the Game Pad. It's officially an Octopus under my TV. It looks like weird electronic tentacle porn back there, raping all sorts of cracks and crevices.

I have MH3U (~6GB), Metroid Prime Trilogy (~11GB), Mario Galaxy 2 (no idea), which I paid for, then NSMBU, and DK Tropical Freeze which I got free with MK8 and as my platinum gift for 2014 respectively. DKTF clocks in at over 10GB as well!

It is really easy to fill the Basic Wii U's 8GB since that includes the OS/dash then MK8 DLC is currently 1GB and looking like being 2GB soon. Pikmin DLC is another 1GB. SSB updates are currently 700GB and will probably multiply that a few times going forward. I also have NES Remix 1+2 and quite a few VC games (18 NES, 5 SNES, 1 N64). That would all fit on a premium pretty easily of course but I think the White Basic looks much better and when I picked up my Basic it was ?60 cheaper than the cheapest premium (six months after launch so was ?140 vs. ?199) so even with the ?40 I spent for the HDD/Y-Cable I'm still ?20 better off and I have 500GB rather than 32GB.
              Toshiba Canvio it is then
It's just got to that point where it's time for an upgrade what with DLC for Smash coming up, the DLC for MK to catch up on and Hyrule Warriors that seems to constantly be adding stuff.
HD is currently full with only the following: Zelda - Minish Cap, Brain Training & saves/necessary updates for disc games.

I bought a second-hand Wii U on Friday - just tried setting it up now. I have an old (1999) Panasonic TV - can't get any picture from the Wii U on the component TV using the same channel as my old Wii, which works fine. Is my telly simply too old? I REALLY want to start playing 200cc Mario Kart.

I'm assuming that is a CRT TV. Most likely the Wii U is already set to display in HD, which that TV doesn't support.

I would connect it to an HDTV/Monitor to set it to SD then reconnect it to your older set.

The 200cc mode won't be added to the game till April 23rd btw.

Yeah, it's a CRT. I just tried changing the setting via the gamepad to 480p SD but apparently it needs to be displaying first. I'll try it on a mate's soon. Thanks for the advice by the way!

Good point, you should be able to yeah. I don't have my Wii U to hand so can't check. Boot it up and go to Settings, then Display Settings. Set it to 480i resolution or 480p if your TV is progressive scan compatible (if it has component input then it probably is).

I think the bigger faux pas was not selling a White 32GB. That pissed me off at least.
I just explained though, 8gb isn't enough, even for those people.

                        We have...

                        Smash bros
                        Mario U
                        Nintendo Land
                        Wii Party

The updates to those (not dlc -just updates!) along with the console updates filled our machine. I had to install an hdd to update and play Mario Kart 8. No Eshop games, just updates to disc games.

Less than half a dozen games.

How big is Wii Party? Because I have the rest of those games fully updated with saves and they don't fill an 8GB:

                          Smash Bros. = 697MB
                          NSMBU = 93MB or SM3DW = 39MB (not sure which you meant)
                          Nintendo Land = 338MB
                          Mario Kart 8 (Incl. DLC) = 1080MB

Worst case that's 2308MB, I have the system fully updated and over 1GB of eShop and VC games on my Wii U itself with 2437MB free so I wonder if you were trying to update everything at once? The Wii U seems to require twice the actual size of a file to download and run an update/installation.

I'm not saying 8GB owners won't be screwed soon but by that point it'll be a 3 year old SKU and my 8GB was ?140 within 6 months of launch so they're a budget thing really. I still think releasing the 8GB was fine, the stupid decision on Nintendo's part was not releasing a Nintendo branded HDD to simplify expansion (the process is very simple, knowing what to buy isn't).

You also have some of the main offenders for storage eating (Pikmin 3 is 912MB with DLC so avoid that one until you upgrade with a HDD) most other games have a smaller footprint. For example fully updated with saves:

                          New Super Luigi U - 14MB
                          Wind Waker HD - 31MB
                          DKC: Tropical Freeze - 30MB
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - 20MB

Even eShop stuff isn't too bad:

                          NES Games (VC) = 15MB
                          SNES Games (VC) = 25MB
                          N64 Games (VC) = 63MB
                          NES Remix 2 = 100MB

Doesn't matter, it's still not enough.

The basis of what you were saying is that the 8gb is enough for casual users. Well, through whatever means, I'm a "core" user and I had the machine claim to have ran out of space. if that produced a problem that I can't really fix short of buying new hardware, a "casual user" is going to have even bigger problems. I think the majority of my space went to the download of WiiU Sports Club, but I don't ever recall telling the machine to download it.

8gb isn't big enough for anyone. It's a totally different situation to the 3DS, where the default card was enough unless you started downloading actual 3DS games from the eShop.

Not quite as big a mis-step as the whole debacle with Microsoft and the Xbox 360 crippled initial console SKU, but Nintendo should just bite the bullet and supply a 250gb HDD next time, minimum, depending on how much they want people to embrace the eShop (or not).

Wouldn't even have to be 250GB (although that would be welcome, and probably wouldn't be that expensive for Nintendo).

120GB would suffice at the very least, no?

In honesty I just plucked a big number out of the air. No number is ever enough for everyone, and I've no idea what kind of size their system updates will have on NX.

The one thing they did right was allow for relatively straightforward USB storage.
