Sega have had ample opportunity to regain all the money they lost on Shenmue.
They royally ****ed themselves out of loads of money with the aliens license - they've had it for ****ing YEARS and only two games have been made. They're even cited as the main reason colonial marines was so bad as they rewrote the script about seven million times during development...
Anyone who's played section 8 or brothers in arms knows timegate and gearbox are quality at fps. Apparently the main reason they kept having to change stuff on the fly was sega giving them countless script rewrites and not giving creative freedom.
Then there's Sonic... nuff said there.
They buried the Condemned series for no reason and bodged the rereleases of all their best games...
It's gobsmacking how bad they've handled their best franchises and licenses.

SEGA been dead to me for years , but just don't get why people go on about the Mega CD, Shenmue or even downsizing ... The Mega CD was just a add-on and its also happens to be one of the better selling add-on's for the consoles, that did ok-ish in the USA. Shenmue 1 and II budget was already paid for and covered the ?200 hundred million that SOJ set aside for Dreamcast development and VF IV profits alone would have more that paid back any losses AM#2 had with the Shenmue project . We'll never ever see a Shenmue III for the simple reason that its sequel flopped on 2 different formats and no board is ever going to green light a sequel to a game that sells fa, far worse than its predecessor more so with the money and man power needed to make Shenmue III
What cost SEGA was the fact they were selling the DC at a loss from the get go and then forced to factor in another price cut just a year latter and that cost SEGA millions, there's that and SOA.SOE loosing the 32 bit battle with is stupid focus on the 32X (where the damage was really done) . And while SEGA been cutting back on staffing levels in USA , its also been expanding CA, buying Atlus and Relic .
The trouble with the current SEGA is that Sammy is focused on profits and has had SEGA focused on the mobile and digital markets which are relativity low risk (in terms of development budgets and teams sizes) and offer quick and easy returns. So SEGA is all but dead to the console gamer and even in the Arcades Sammy seem to stop the big huge productions from the AM teams in efforts to bring in better dividends.
