I mean Diddy Kong Racing and Mario Kart 64 are part of the same genre; it doesn't mean they aren't different - hell, Atari Karts and Mario Kart are part of the same genre, even though Atari Karts is one of the worst games ever, and Mario Kart is one of the best.
Both games (going back to DMC and GoW) see you navigate a pretty linear story, moving through a series of arena locations and fighting enemies with a superficially similar combat system (certainly GoW's system has many elements modelled on DMC). You collect enemy souls to upgrade your weapons, you unlock new combos and abilities, you engage in both ranged and close combat, there are light elements of platforming... The only difference I can see is that I'm not sure if you're ranked on your progress in God of War, but then GoW's primary difference is that the story is a really big focus, whereas in DMC1 it's more about the actual gameplay for the fun of it.
Why do you consider them a different genre, as opposed to being quite different games in the same genre?
