Side-scrolling Shooter: Run and Gun for Contra, I'd say!
Definitely not a shmup because you control when you scroll and you're not off the ground.

Nam '75, Cabal and Blood brothers is trickier. They're like light gun games without the gun and a on-screen character that has to avoid being hit.
    I dunno, Stand and Shoot?!

OK, these games are Shooting Gallery: Cabal Shooter.

"A specific subgenre of this type of game is the Cabal shooter, named for the game Cabal, in which the player controls an on-screen avatar that can run and often jump around the screen in addition to being able to aim their gun. Other games in this subgenre include Blood Bros., Dynamite Duke, NAM-1975, Wild Guns, and Sin and Punishment.
As light gun games became more prevalent and started to make use of fully 3D backgrounds, such as the Time Crisis or House of the Dead series, these sorts of games fell out of popular production, but many like Blood Bros. still have their fanbase today."

The only vertical shooters I have ever enjoyed are 1942 on the C64 and Power Strike 2 on the Game Gear. I much prefer horizontal shooters. Cream of the crop are R-Type (personal favourite versions: PC Engine, Master System, GBC, and Spectrum, plus C64 just for the music), R-Type Delta, and Airzonk.

Galary Shooter sounds right actually, I loved Cabal back in the day
I think Dynamite Duke & Dick Tracy also fall into this category?

I still have my big box version of R-Type for the speccy, still love it, think it was a real marvel back in the day, the sprites looked great on such a weak machine

I'm loving this grey area discrimination of shooters! With something like Granada on MD, I'm pretty sure most people would say it was a shooter...yet if you changed the main sprite to a little bloke, then they'd likely call it a top-down action game in the vein of Alien Syndrome.

Myself, I'd say Contra 3 was a shooter. But maybe not a shooter. It's in the inflection. Contra 3 is VERY shooty. It's shootier than many shooters and the shots are shottier.

God damn subgenres turning up and spoiling the party!

I'm glad someone mentioned Granada, anyway. It's my fave shooty game on the machine. That and Midnight Resistance....which I'd say was an......aaaargh!!!

I'm going to say Kiki kiki kaikai is a shooter. If you can call thunderforce 2 a shooter then Kiki is a shooter too.

I think anyone on here who has a 360 and likes shooty stuff should give it a try and report back!!!!
I bought this last night and spent far too long having "just one more go"!

Basically, it's exactly the same as Warning Forever but without the wireframe graphics, which is fine by me, but I wonder what happened to the guy who made WF, Hikoza T Ohkubo? Infinity Danger is by Milkstone Studios who also made the brilliant Micro Machines clone, Little Racers Street, also well worth checking out.

Anyway, it was 64p well spent! I love how the ships evolve based on how you attack them. By the time the lasers and the missiles are coming at you, it gets pretty frenetic! I can't remember how far I got. Maybe level 14?

I always thought it was Granada X until someone on here told me it's just the box surrounding the name makes it look like it ends in an X. It's a great excuse to repost the excellent artwork though...

Heh! I've called it Granada X from the day I first saw it in an import shop in Edinburgh way back on release, never knew that!

Every day's a school day, Colin!

Do you have a 360 still to try that Infinity Danger out on? I think you'd like it.

I think the answer is "no".

If I'm honest, Microsoft keep moving the goalposts from their E3 launch, so I don't know what's going on.
It won't be backwards compatible. It will be backwards compatible.

We're not supporting Indie Games. Here's a load of new Indie games.

Ultimately, I doubt you can play it on your One.

I always called it Granada X too! It's cooler!! Most online seem to call it plain Granada...I think I'll revert back to Granada X now seeing as you guys thought it was that too.

                          GRANADA X FTW!!!!!!

If you're looking for another XBLIG shooter, I remember quite enjoying Vorpal.
