SNES Streetfighter 2 is probably the game I've played most of all the one v one fighters, but I didn't like the Alpha games, and only fleetingly played the games on PS2 and PS3.

Tekken is probably my answer to the question, as it has been consistently fun to play, and has lots of humourous touches like the baby kangaroo in Roger's pouch also brandishing boxing gloves.

I also enjoyed the recent Dead or Alive game on PS4, Vita and 3DS.

I've tried hard to like the King of Fighters series, but I'm not very good at this kind of game, so I end up relying on flying kicks and sweep kicks to get through a few rounds, until inevitably I meet a team against whom that doesn't work, and I get beaten. I think part of the attraction of Tekken is that even crap players can still get through the one-player modes, although the flaming boss of Tekken 5 drove me mad.

Like Tobal, I would probably have gone for the Tobal series had this question been asked in about 2000, but it never got updated. I'd love to see Tobal No 1 and 2 on PSN.

Street Fighter for nostalgia. I also really liked those Capcom vs Fighters (X-Men, Capcom vs X-Men etc) in the 90's.

I enjoy Tekken and Soul Calibur for their style and ease of play. I think they're more casual player friendly.

This thread has made me reflect on how many fighter series fell by the wayside, even from the early 3D era - Fighting Vipers, Star Gladiator, Last Bronx (well, there was only 1 of that), Toshinden, Tobal, Ehrgeiz, Fighter's Destiny, Psychic Force... Even Bloody Roar, which I always felt was a much stronger game than most people realised.

In fact, I'm very disappointed that Bloody Roar died out. I think that series had legs, especially with modern fighters that tend to have more of a narrative than older ones. The original on PS1 is still terrific fun.
