Xbox One downgraded to a "disc only" machine

So last night, the only useable content on the Xbox One in many regions was disc purchased content.

Anything that was downloaded, including games and apps like Netflix threw up various different error codes, most of them requesting for a disc to be inserted.

The MS support forums were awash with thousands of posts all saying "what the??"

The only way around it was to disconnect the network cable or remove the wifi details so that it didn't even try and connect to xbox live. That of course is no use for something like Netflix, but at least the games could be played.

I don't know what DRM magic invoked this "disc" requirement, but MS's promises to remove the dependency on Live for apps like Netflix and Youtube are either empty or highly unprioritised. This needs fixing first before we get more social dashboard features that no one will ever use.

edit: according to some newspapers, PSN was also down. Was this a DDOS attack then? If so, it's even more important that highly used apps do not depend on Live, because that stuff is never going to go away.

Had a total rage fest about this, then played PS4 about the situation.

I mean, yeah I did have to get up to put Destiny in the PS4, which I could have done for XBOXONE. But it's the principle

This only serves to highlight why a lot of people didn't want to Deal With an "Always On Only" machine.

My only non disc game didn't work. Xbox Live multiplayer was working but the game wouldn't load.

Always online remains a dumb idea for any game that isn't literally an online specific one. SF5 wouldn't connect last night for me so I turned it off, no reason at all it's set up the way it is. Pointless negative PR.

I can only laugh at those who bang on about their digital media purchases. See what happens when you don't buy a disc! Another point to us who still want are real physical software

This may have been a Euro thing though as everything was fine in Japan. Saying that I do use the UK Xbox One login. Odd.

Yeah it's pretty silly and it makes you glad this isn't a regular occurance.

They need to have some solution in place that stops this from happening if LIVE is partially down.
They might as well take it totally offline, because the outcome would have been better for many players because they would of actually been able to play the games.

I'll try and remember that the next time I have a Dreamcast disc that fails to work for the slightest scratch

I had zero problems myself. Import gaming and online erm, accounting FTW!

Although I would love a system that just plays discs with no online, I'm now fully on board with online and the cool stuff it offers. Yes, it's **** you can't play your games when there's an outage but it does not happen often and it's back up in a few hours.

Maybe I'm just no longer an archivist about gaming, I've mellowed or I just don't care as much about keeping the hardware running? All my consoles have developed faults through the years which required replacing so gaming has always been disposable. It's only emulation (That still required porting to new architecture and systems) that allows for trouble free gaming, but even then, you buy new hardware to run the software. I trust the guys and girls doing sterling work with emulating games to keep our history alive, because god knows, the developers and publishers can't.

I'm having fun in the here and now with my Xbox and Wii U, 5 years from now, there's not many games from this generation I'll want to re-play and I just want to have fun with the new stuff!

Yes its like a Power Cut it happens now and again but its not a major deal. I much rather the lack of need to put a disc in the machine each time you want to play a different game.

Yeah bar one or 2 classic consoles I just will never go back to playing old consoles , even the 360 and PS3 are collecting dust these days and I may as well sell them tbh .

Rather than the endless download vs physical circles, I meant this thread more as a comment on the dependency on Live of apps. NOT dependency on Internet of games. There's no good reason that Netflix on the Xbox should not work if Live is down when it still works on every other device in the house. If Live is down, I still want the option of using the box for other stuff.
