Were I the paranoid type, Id think he was aiming that at me.
Hold on... I AM THE PARANOID TYPE!
Ive certainly sent enough hate mail to him so that he'd notice.
And on every forum I visit Ive said something bad about him.

And I know for a fact he uses this site, he certainly comments about it often enough, rememeber that whole shikigami column he did?

        hmmm.... the plot thickens. Intriuging.

wait, did he mean game playing wise?

not the first or last time redeyes mouth has sprouted crap, thats for sure.

Gah @ Edge getting their Top Spin, FFX2 and Max Payne 2 reviews out before we did

I think Ill settle down with this months issue which popped through my door today, together with some horrible looking PS2 magazine Ive not read before..

The Gotcha Force and Transformers Tataki scores are too low (especially for Gotcha Force), and the Macross score is too high. Is it me or are all the high scoring games in EDGE always somehow pweddy? Food for thought and all that.

Gotcha Force isn't a brilliant game but it certainly isn't awful either.
I've quite enjoyed it, even though it is fairly simplistic and can get a little "samey".

I disagree. RedEye writes the best colums, IMO (though he has been flagging of late). Even if you don't agree with him, they make you think.

I also think 'that article' was absolutely spot on in its criticism of elitist posturing.

Bashing hardcore is like shooting fish in a barrel. It doesn't bother me one jot what Edge say about hardcore games. There is some truth that some hardcore gamers can be knobs, bit then so can some so called casual gamers. Hardly ground breaking news imo.

Edge has and always will be about big contradictions. On one hand it eugolises the mainstream and goes on about games like Eyetoy bringing in the masses, on the otherhand it celebrates the renaisance of the shmup as a return to old school roots. Edge can blather on about how it is important that games like The Sims bring more equality to gaming, but you can guarantee that the next obscure Treasure release will get a good review (even if it is **** ).

An interesting point, I think the first eye toy game was excellent, and was very surprised when many self proclaimed serious gamers shunned it.
Id say it rates way up their in terms of hardcore serious gaming, I mean such a novel camera based game is quite revolutionary.

When I first saw it at an initial preview at the Barbicans "Game On" exhibit, my initial thinking was that casual gamers would shun since it didnt use a pad. I thought to myself, "now theres a new product all serious gamers are going to be desperate to get hold of"
Interestingly reality turned out to be the total opposite. At least from what Ive heard floating about.

Anyway, my hatred for Redeye stems from the fact that I took it personally. (yah, I know, not a good thing to do )

But for a mag meant to be about serious gameplaying and enjoyment, suddenly it was like a kick in the teeth, his 4 or so anti-hardcore rants, along with Pooleys anti-hardcore rant was like them saying
"If you take gaming seriously you are an idiot"
That was my interpretation, hey, maybe Im not reading deeply into it enough, getting the hidden vibe, but I take things at face value, and that was my gut reaction.
"Regardless of what type of serious gamer you are, your still an idiot."
Now I like gaming, alot. I collect and play a great deal, and rather than dedicating my free time to other hobbies, I focus on gaming.
I mix with people who feel the same, its my niche, my world. Its what I do dammit, and I wear this hobby with pride in the face of anyone who criticises it. I make no bones about my heated views.

Normally mainstream media knock it, or old people, or the government, or non-gameplayers, or those in education, or I dunno, anyone else except the serious gaming press, and fellow gamers.
Now I can handle some single format PSX rag trying to say how they're all about it being a casual passing interest and anyone who takes it seriously is in some way mentally defunct.
But from a mag I had subscribed to, I felt betrayed.
It was like a stab in the back almost. The gaming press are meant to be on the side of gaming.

His point didnt make me think, it didnt highlight the dangers of elitism, if didnt do jack apart from actually making me more narrow minded, insular and pretty much everything he was trying to derail.
It compounded any percieved problem he was trying to adress. Hell, the petty bastard even went on to criticise people for wearing faded black jeans.

I like to think of myself as an open minded gamer that likes all games, but those columns cut deep for me.

In the end, I only ended up reading Paul Roses and Nagoshi's column, before hiding it away on a shelf never to be seen again.
Interestingly enough, I agreed with the majority of Pauls statements.
He tried to say how he was more mainstream gamer, but really, he sounds about as hardcore/serious as they come.
Loved his rant on online gaming, most of his stuff is good.

And dont try the whole, "well theres a column for everyone then" story, because for me, redeyes bitting animosity simply tainted everything else.

I only wish Id read his column in DOAX issue, since that Miyamoto morning I talked with some edge writers, I could have had a bit of catharsis of my own, vented some rage.

the crux of RedEye's article was elitism.

Years ago, I used to be the type to bitch about the western localisation of Japanese games, but RedEye's article actually made me see it from a different persepctive (ie the concessions were to try and make the game appealing to those who may not even give it a second look).

All in all, he had a fair point; these changes aren't made for fun. Whether they succeed or not is another issue, but I can at least understand why now.

Also having met some extremely elitist gamers, the types to whom anything Japanese is a sacred cow and anything western an anathema, RedEye's article was a much needed wake-up call.

I'm as keen a gamer as anyone else here, and it didn't offend me in the slightest. Why? It wasn't aimed at me. That's why.
