It wasn't a dig at the PSVR2 itself, more how small the discount is they're offering

The devs of Vampire: The Masquerade - Justice have done a Q&A and confirmed that the PSVR2 version of the game will use the haptics and will render as standard at 4000x2000 resolution using dynamic FOV rendering so that the part you are focused on will render at 6800x3468 at native 120hz

You wait months for an update on Sony's VR plans and then...

Firewall Ultra looks to be terminated as Sony are shutting down the entire studio

This is their 4th game and only firewall on psvr1 has seen moderate success and found an audience, feels like they have been running on fumes for a while.

Very short-sighted by Sony, but feels planned as an end of year buried type of announcement to try and minimise the damage, Sony had banked on Firewall being their big end of year game and it massively underdelivered, Reviews panned it for being very bare bones and packed full of grindy live service crap which ended up with the game being a ghost town.

Sony made a massive error not making PSVR2 backward compatible. I don't believe for a second that it couldn't be done.

Like a badly treated lover who keeps thinking their partner will change, looks like Sony won't be acknowledging today being the first anniversary of PSVR2 in any meaningful way... but maybe by the summer they'll have something to say... if we give them one more chance...

But perhaps we have our PSVR2 strategy here, Sony is spending its time making the headset work on PC

It's an interesting move, the tech in it for the price is pretty compelling from a cost point of view vs its competitors (its over half the price of the valve index and features tech not in the index eye tracking for one). It's a win for Sony as it opens up an entire new marketplace for its headset, and it's a win for steam as it brings in new VR customers to its ecosystem.

Interesting. People who are knowledgeable about VR, how does the PSVR2 match up as a PCVR headset against the Quest 3?

                        Comment

I imagine you'll get different answers on that one. Considering what games usually support etc outside of enthusiasts perhaps my money still falls easily with Quest 3

If Sony get the PSVR 2 working on steam, it would make it the cheapest OLED headset with eye tracking for PC. The quest uses LED screens and doesn't have eye tracking, it does however have the benefit of pancakes lens which don't require as much adjustment to get a clear blur free looking set up. Theirs not much difference in price between a Quest 3 and PSVR2.

if your looking at them in isolation from steam, the quest has a bigger library and is wire free so you can start playing in one area and end up in the kitchen punching your nan in the face. its graphics take a big hit compared to the psvr2 as dose the time you can use it as its battery is massive but running fans screens and a mobile phone architecture gets you about an hour and a half of playtime.

My gut feeling for this move is... Sony has decided PSVR isn't viable. I know that sounds like a huge negative sucker punch but we know that sales of the headset are bad. This helps Sony give it a marginal increase (which we know will be small as all non-Quest headsets don't sell great) but they get more units shifted than they otherwise would.

However it's a particular niche who will own a PS5 and a PC and be sold by this move. Mostly it will be added functionality for those already with both but no PCVR headset. That doesn't help Sony though as that's not a headset sale and suddenly they're giving those PSVR2 users access to a much cheaper ecosystem so lose PS Store cuts from already small numbers of sales.

The audience for PSVR2's key features will be limited too because the software isn't out there to use it, by the time that changes PSVR2 will have been discontinued.

The way I can square this mostly in my head is that it's an extension of their PC expansion. PS5 players might double dip and the precedent of support then exists to get Horizon VR etc out on PC where they can try to recoup more costs. Future first party games could day one release on both and PSVR2 owners have freedom of choice so there's a goodwill element to what is a limited support accessory.

Hopefully opening up to PC entices Sony to remaster some PSVR1 games too but it feels like they're largely softening the future blow of stepping back.

Actually, having PC maybe lead to ports and updates could be the best bit given how many good PSVR games are currently destined to be lost when the headsets times are passed
