There are some preview plays coming out that suggest that it's not a bag of balls and might actually be 'fun'.

It just has an odd look. Replace the realism with something a little more cartoony to match the sonic character design and it would be massively improved.

If the terrible pop in and flickering textures demonstrated in this video is anything to go by, then I still remain wholey unconvinced technically and artistically.
            But...it could be 'fun'?

Apparently Sonic Mania takes place in Modern Sonic's past meaning that there is only one timeline.
              I mean...

The idea of Sonic and a workable canon to its story is... yeah.

Agreed, NI. Creating a Sonic timeline is even less worthwhile than a Zelda one. One of the franchise's defining features is that it's not strong on continuity.

Yeah. You can think that maybe sonic 1,2&3 are linked. But actually they aren't. There is no narrative thread tieing them together. I mean you could say the plane at the beginning of 3 is the one they flew away in at the end of 2, but even so its tentative.
After that the games are just arcade style 'one and done' stories.
Sonic and Mario don't need a 'verce'.

The furries need their lore. Let them have it.

My copy of Sonic Frontiers just arrived

That's not a shipping update. I've just heard that the first step in dealing with abusive behavior is admitting you have a problem.

Don't really care about any Sonic timeline but Sonic Origins confirmed that sonic 3 is 100% set directly after Sonic 2.

Maybe, but outside of that more recent stuff, I think it's totally fair to say that Sonic 1-CD-2-Spinball-3-&K are really thin, narratively, if you only go from what's in the game and not what's written in their manuals, or comics, or whatever. You might say that Sonic 3 takes place just after the end of Sonic 2, and that's certainly what I thought as a kid, but they were games first, stories second.

It prevented Sonic from having problems like Halo 3, where you stop fighting the infinitely more interesting Covenant enemies to fight The Flood all the time, because the story only made sense if you did that, despite that being subjectively worse for gameplay.

Been hearing very good things about this now, excited!

Just been listening to Jeff Gerstmann on Twitch and he's not only impressed but while talking about the new God of War "Left to my own devices, I would rather be playing Sonic out of those 2, it's weirdly great."

Okay, it's on my radar now!

I've been reading about it and seeing impressions that suggests it's not or decent at times. Still keeping low expectations though because it's a 3D Sonic game/Sega. Will probably go halves on it with my cousin in a few months when it's inevitably <£30

I've not really kept track of it since the earlier reveals. I know the bad pop in is still there and the Green Hill themed level looked awful, but for 3D Sonic I definitely keep expectations in check anyway given how very few are remotely decent
