I can objectively see that Sonic 2 is better in many ways, but I got Sonic 3 around launch, all the way back in February of '94. We weren't very well-off, and while I had a Megadrive so it would be wrong of me to suggest we were poor, money was tight. I would only maybe get a videogame for Christmas and as an adult, looking back, I suspect they were second-hand (though I loved them all the same).

But I loved Sonic the Comic and had played Sonic 2 to death at a friends' house, so when Sonic 3 came out, I'd been doing well at school and my parents bought me it, brand-spanking new (I remember it had a receipt in the bag, £52).

I have no idea just how many times I played it end-to-end. I actually wouldn't want to know. But I went back to it on a ROM about 2 years ago after over 20 years since I last played it and I still knew every jump, every enemy, every boss.

A proper widescreen, 60fps remake in that engine - I'd definitely pay just for that to exist.
I enjoy sonic 2 a lot but I find Sonic 3 & Knuckles has better level design, is a bigger game, better bosses and the best soundtrack of all the MD sonics.
I'm excited for this collection just because S3& Knuckles isn't playable on as many platforms. I have the 360 version on Xbox one and it doesn't have the option for level select when you beat the game meaning you can't just replay from the start with Super sonic/Hyper sonic etc. and you can't use debug mode or anything like that. So hoping this time it'll have those options.

I assume that's just going to be all of the Christian Whitehead reworks of the games in one package?

Sega get so much right when they engage the likes of M2/Whitehead for their ports.

Then they go and sit on so much of their old IP. Then again, I tried playing Sonic CD after Sonic Mania and that has to be one of the biggest mistakes of my life so far. It just doesn't hold up at all anymore and feels a lot more ropey than some random fan ROM hack you'd find somewhere.

I played Sega Sonic at an arcade/museum a few months back. It was really, really dire. There was of course a selection of their other arcade exclusives like Scud Race, JP:The Lost World, Daytona 2, etc.. None held my interest at all really, in fact on some I was desperate for my credit to end so I could move to the next game (Which turned out to be 4P OutRun 2 for most of the afternoon). 2P Pod Racer is still a lot of fun, especially with my son.

In fairness, I would back M2 to make improvements to SegaSonic to make it more playable and enjoyable if they were ever to port it.

I just don't see why Sega expect people to keep on buying Sonic 1/OutRun/Super Hang-On/Altered Beast, etc. over and over and over again before they'll actually come with arcade ports that we haven't seen before.

I shouldn't have to be spending £200 for an Astro City Mini to get a proper Sega classic compilation.

Yeah, it's always a shame to see the same things trotted out over and over.

To be clear, I don't begrudge Sega releasing the usual suspects on every platform now, as long as the company continues to exist. But it's nice to see them widen that selection with some of the lost classics.

As much as I like the fact that the trailer seems to imply that Tyson Hesse, Whitehead & Tee Lopes appear to have been (sensibly) kept on from the stellar work they did on Mania, Origins is a "thanks, but no, thanks" from me.

                      Yawn.

Can I just check something - is this the first time we've had a Christian Whitehead version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles?

                        As I'm sold, if so.

My understanding is that this is indeed the case.

I certainly can't recall of any other instance where Taxman's version of S3&K has been ported outside of the mobile platforms.

Still not enough for me to want to buy this but I can acknowledge that this is a significant first.

The obligatory Sonic MD games rerelease. Every gen has to have one.

TBH I’ll probably buy it. Lol

If it gets a physical release with all of the content on it (à la Sonic Mania Plus) and a decent price drop then I might reconsider.

How often do they need to bring these games out?!
Get an emulator and mod the crap out of it if you want it to look sharp like this.
