So, minor hardware upgrade due to parts obsolescence. I like the integrated ethernet port but I'm in no rush to buy one. I don't quite understand the "enhanced speakers" in portable mode when likely everyone will be using headphones.

It's almost certainly because the parts for the old one might be becoming more expensive, so they're revising it.

Like how there are actually 20 different Playstation revisions, which are all basically the same, but they had different components.

EDIT: Though I will give Nintendo one thing - they skipped E3. They could've announced this, but didn't. I have to assume they knew it would be disappointing, so they held it off for a low-key announcement.

It's actually more likely to be the fact that Nvidia are pretty much no longer making the OG hardware (ie. Tegra X1 Processor) for the Switch so this is just Nintendo falling in line spec-wise, but yeah I get the point you're making.

It's still pointless, though. Switch hardware isn't particularly resource-intensive and the original hardware was printing money just fine. But this OLED model will obviously replace the current "standard" model when Nintendo no longer have stock in reserve.

Which is even worse really considering it's $50 higher in price, Nintendo effectively just announced a console going up in rrp

I almost expect a statement from No.10 denying they put this news out to distract from other bad news stories.

I'm relieved that's out the way. At least I can finally buy back in with one of these at some point. Likely Christmas.

Finally got to read around elsewhere, seems a mixture of disappointment and renewed delusion about Switch Pro/2 in 2022 now

Nintendo has made it clear already, Switch is intended to run long term and they're right to as well. A high spec model just needs to be let go now

Yeah, I'm wondering whether there will actually be a Switch 2 or just bi yearly iterations. I guess there needs to be at some point as software needs to get more advanced at some point.

Yup. Not a great look at all considering what this is missing (revised/fixed Joy-Con, proper Bluetooth Audio support, etc.)

Nah. Boris & his crew will more likely display faux-outrage at Nintendo doing such a thing, a la European Super League!

I'm going to assume that GAME and other retail outlets will at least have the good grace to offer a trade-in programme that makes this at least a little viable, like what we've seen in the past with the DS and 3DS iterations.

                          LOL. There's always one.

Let's be real though - the PS Vita fvcking sucked.

Well tbh I couldn’t care less about the new model , money saved I guess

Tbh, the reveal is only good news. No need to worry about split game releases etc. After Nintendo said they wanted to redefine generation lengths that immediately lent itself to potentially 7yr+ too which makes sense if Rockstar and Bethesda can shill a single game for 10yr+. Probably need to really let any hopes of Mario Kart 9 go though

After complaints about the flimsy kickstand of the original they've really gone all out, haven't they? The back is practically all kickstand. Kickstand porn! KICKSTAND TO DIE FOR!!!
