I think Sony will be fine to be honest. COD is a big loss, but they still have a load of reasons to own a PlayStation. And who knows, by the time COD is exclusive, Sony might have a FPS of their own on the way.

Resistance: Full of Men? Best game title ever. Whether typo or deliberate I need to play this game.

Sony have plenty of exclusives and I don't think they've even plundered some of the back catalogue IP which could compete in the FPS space.

There are however obviously the casual buyer who will literally buy a console just to play the newest COD, even if it was absolutely crap compared to last year's COD. It's the same with FIFA.

As for MS saving their money to stay in 3rd place. They've said it all along and it needs repeating, they're not doing this to be in a console war and a position of console sales... they're doing this to change the entire landscape and make that a pointless comparator.

All they really want is 100m game pass subscribers and a reason to never leave.

This landscape that MS are sculpting is a double edged sword for me. I'm enjoying Game Pass. I can try lots of games, I may never have got around to playing. However, and it might be just me, but I find it very throw away-ish. I dip into games for minutes and if it don't grab me, I'm out. This is probably very unfair of me. Maybe if I had bought the game, I'd have no choice but to give it a chance.

So, we have this Netflix style gaming service alongside a store to download the game outright, but I fear what the future looks like. Cloud gaming, no physicals, subscription, more throw-away approach from me. Maybe I need to move with the times.

Guess all those gamepass subs are guna have to actually start paying for it then, ms are going to need some of that walking around money back.

This is why it's interesting to see call for a PlayStation Game Pass as the reality is these big buyouts would become even more common if that were to happen and take off. It makes the market competition a purely content driven one like we're seeing with the streaming TV services so you'd soon not just see big companies swallowed up by MS and Sony but also the death of the multiplatform release.

Microsoft positions itself to gain more exclusives

Forum: Microsoft shouldn't be buying studios and getting exclusives.
It's not complicated; exclusives are good when they're games which otherwise would not exist, and not good when they're bought.

So for example, when Microsoft bought the exclusive to that Tomb Raider game, it was three-quarters finished. They weren't making an exclusive game; MS paid to not have the game on the Playstation.

Microsoft absolutely should position itself to get more exclusives - by creating and setting up studios. By using their money to make new stuff. The industry and players both benefit from this.

Nothing good comes of Microsoft buying ActiBlizz, or Ubisoft, or EA.

It's much easier to buy a developer, use the games it has in production and then bin them off. EA do it, and now MS. I don't believe, except for maybe COD and WoW that we will see anything actually new and interesting come out of this. In 10 years it'll be a dead company.

People are expecting a new Crash or Spyro game. Ridiculous. If MS wanted a classic platformer they already own the IP Banjo and haven't bothered. MS want head turner's. COD gets attention.

They could of set up 100 new studios and paid the staff for life with 70b.

Or set up a small base on another planet.
