    BPX066: Next Gen Take Two

We stand a little over 18 months into the new generation of consoles, as yet we've seen no sign of Slim models or even a single game that would be considered to have been developed for the latest machines rather than with the previous generation in mind. It's been mooted that Sony, for example, won't be ready to fully step away from PlayStation 4 software versions until 2025 whilst Microsoft appears to be committed to supporting its Xbox One generation systems alongside its Series S/X consoles.

Despite this we've already seen the rumour mill gain momentum that around 2024 both Sony and Microsoft will be launching PlayStation 5 Pro and Series X2

Pushing aside the hyperbole it's clear to anyone with an ounce of common sense that claims of 8K gaming and the likes in any worthwhile capacity won't bear fruit. Instead such consoles would likely seek to bolster 4K60fps support as more technologically advances titles arrive finally taking advantage of the current machines and driving framerates down to consistent 30fps titles and sub-4K resolutions.

Again though, we're talking about the first true built for PS5 and XSX generation games arriving in Year 3 or possibly Year 4 of this generations cycle. This heavily pushes the case that this generation may be the longest and 2024 releases for Pro models may result in Pro 2 models before we see the following generation arrive should such rumours of mid-gen refreshes be true at all given the less than stellar impact they made last generation.

Should Sony and Microsoft take the approach of releasing PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X2 in late 2024, would you pay the potentially north of £550 price tags these machines could carry to retain 60fps where possible?

I have yet to pick up either as at the moment both have games libarys that don't interest me at all hence me sticking to the switch and my PS4. I'm in no hurry to upgrade at all.

I've got both and would stick with them.

        Absolutely zero interest.

I think it'd be taking the piss a bit announcing a Pro version of the PS5 when you can't even get a standard version one and a half years after launch.

Absolutely not trying to start another flame war, but I remember clinging onto my XBox 360 after the subsequent gen came out, watching the release schedule dwindle away as game developers moved to the newer platforms, but that hasn't really happened yet. Nearly everything is getting a PS4 release, and definitely anything I'd like to play (Sifu, Elden Ring).

Also, I'm really not bothered about graphics and 60fps as long as the game is fun.

I tend to always upgrade with mid-gen refreshes, if only for the fact the trade in value and usage of rewards points (where xbox is concerned) makes it worthwhile.

I think the only current console I've held off upgrading is the switch but I use that a lot less than my others so the OLED doesn't concern me.

That said I think both Sony and MS would be stupid to do mid-gen refreshes here, both the X and the PS5 are solid performers... Really I think only perhaps the Series S could do with a memory jolt but retain the form factor, so a mild refresh if anything.

I would probably consider it if there was a decent trade-in deal on my PS5 against the PS5 Pro. Like a £100 to £150 premium on top.

To be honest it feels completely unnecessary at this stage, though.

I only have a Series S now as my PS4 popped its clogs. It does me absolutely fine with the addition of Game Pass as far as all my modern gaming needs are concerned. I agree with the sentiment that a PS5 Pro would be a bit insulting to consumers who can't even buy a standard PS5 after all this time.

It’s far too early in this cycle to even consider an upgrade imo

I agree, it's too early. There isn't even anything remotely pushing the ps5 yet so why upgrade it?
I never got a PS4 Pro; I'll probably dodge the next one too.

Don't think I've actually played a next gen exclusive on my PS5 as yet. No way I'm upgrading anytime soon.

Covid put everything on hold for a year so it doesn't make any sense

Depending on timing I would likely go for the X2 largely because of the rewards point angle that might mitigate much of the cost. With the PS5 Pro though, the direction of practices Sony have been headed in and how extensively the PC and XSX cover things have cut down my time on PS5 massively. If things continue that way, particularly if more games are handled like GT7, it'll be incredibly easy to stick to the standard PS5 for the sake of 2-3 exclusives a year and focus on the other two.
