We stand a little over 18 months into the new generation of consoles, as yet we've seen no sign of Slim models or even a single game that would be considered to have been developed for the latest machines rather than with the previous generation in mind. It's been mooted that Sony, for example, won't be ready to fully step away from PlayStation 4 software versions until 2025 whilst Microsoft appears to be committed to supporting its Xbox One generation systems alongside its Series S/X consoles.
Despite this we've already seen the rumour mill gain momentum that around 2024 both Sony and Microsoft will be launching PlayStation 5 Pro and Series X2
Pushing aside the hyperbole it's clear to anyone with an ounce of common sense that claims of 8K gaming and the likes in any worthwhile capacity won't bear fruit. Instead such consoles would likely seek to bolster 4K60fps support as more technologically advances titles arrive finally taking advantage of the current machines and driving framerates down to consistent 30fps titles and sub-4K resolutions.
Again though, we're talking about the first true built for PS5 and XSX generation games arriving in Year 3 or possibly Year 4 of this generations cycle. This heavily pushes the case that this generation may be the longest and 2024 releases for Pro models may result in Pro 2 models before we see the following generation arrive should such rumours of mid-gen refreshes be true at all given the less than stellar impact they made last generation.
Should Sony and Microsoft take the approach of releasing PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X2 in late 2024, would you pay the potentially north of £550 price tags these machines could carry to retain 60fps where possible?
