I’d like to see a handheld only Switch 2 come in at €400 or so. But then two dock options, a standard dock (€80, or it can just come with the handheld) that simply provides TV play, or a Pro dock (€300) with Nvidia RTX boost capability. So 4K w/DLSS, 3060 levels of grunt, etc. That way the people who want PS5+/XSX+ levels of performance can have it.

The only problem with that is that the games would have to be developed with two profiles in mind.

That will be £1400 rrp by the time Nintendos accountants are done with that please.

We all know that Nintendo would not be doing any currency conversion whatsoever, so €700 would be £700 and $700 for the optimum Switch 2 setup as described here.

That RRP would make it absolutely DOA.

Even €480/£480/$480 on the low-end would be a tough sell in the current climate.

That’s why I’m thinking the Tory dock would be completely optional. It wouldn’t be a requirement at all. I’m fully expecting PS4 Pro/Deck+ levels of performance from the next hardware (discounting a 1080p screen which is almost a certainty), so being able to boost that when being played on a TV would be a nice option.

They'll wait just long enough to sell Mario Odyssey again as 'Retro' for a limited run.

I think any new handheld whether Switch or Steam Deck would be smart to upgrade the docked experience via a "pro" dock that uses extra onboard grunt to push better experiences on larger screens.

The switch is looking pretty dated now in what it can do technically but as a hardware design it's still super slim and gorgeous in OLED form. I think Nintendo should keep that and improve on it... but really push the envelope with the dock.

For Steam Deck I want even more but it's stuff Nintendo wouldn't venture in our lifetimes.

Nintendo might just forgo the dock altogether given the several options around that. Question is whether we'll see an OLED Switch Lite

I wonderful any of the steaming protocols like AirPlay or similar are low enough latency to be implemented in a future system negating the need for a dock? Or maybe a HDMI dongle that implements an updated version of the system used with the WiiU?

Interesting idea but although the likes of Miracast/Airplay are standardised, the sheer number of different devices that use them inevitably results in odd issues here and there (dropped connection, failure to connect, system requiring reboot, loaded WiFi etc). I work in AV and see these issue firsthand with pro AV installations. Also Miracast in particular does have significant lag and usually tops out at around 30fps with an unstable framerate. Airplay fairs better but requires connection over the network rather than point to point connection so this introduces issues too.

Also one of the things I love about plugging the Switch up to the telly in addition to games looking a whole lot better is the chance to use the lovely Pro controller over the pesky joycons. Sure you could still use the controller if the console were casting to the screen, but it wouldn’t *need* to use casting and instead could be sat happily in a dock which would be more reliable and possibly lower cost (at least versus a proprietary wireless receiver, assuming Miracast/Airplay are not practical). Oh, and the little thing about charging whilst sat in the dock too.

Wireless casting to a proprietary HDMI dongle is a cool idea. Streaming the other way to the WiiU gamepad screen always worked very well and was leagues ahead of the PS4’s streaming to the Vita.

The main problem with it though is that the two-screen idea of the WiiU had such little value in the end. Even most of the flagship games didn’t make any use of it at all. So you’re probably better off with the Switch’s current simpler, cheaper USB-C dock setup.

Still, I think this could happen for the next gen Switch. It would be an obvious point of differentiation at least. And the two screen thing was great for local multiplayer. Mario Chase was a lot of fun and it’s a shame the idea wasn’t explored further.

The only game I can honestly remember the WiiU pad helping was quick jumps on Splatoon. Now you have to open the map to jump back to base, which takes an eternity in comparison.

The WiiU Gamepad is the worst Nintendo peripheral of all-time.

It was a crap idea back then and it would be a crap idea now. Best left dead.

It was good for making levels in Mario Maker.

That is an exception, not a rule.

Over the distance, it is an absolutely dreadful device.
