When the f*ck are they gonna abolish the scoring system?

    Waste of time IMO.

I'm guessing that this is first issue from Mr Mott and crew, going on the timing. Things look to be changing already and I have to admit, I agree with the majority of the scores on offer (and those I don't agree with are only because I can't comment... haven't played Arc, for example). R:RE was disappointing, F-Zero was far too easy and lacklustre, Sword Of Mana was alright but rather dry and Astroboy is a work of art.

Looking forward to actually reading the damn thing, of course...

So how the hell is R:RE dissapointing?

I agree with Mart. I don't know if this is Tony Mott's/the new team's first issue in charge, but already the scores look more consistent than those of the recent previous few months. Of course, no judgements can be made until I have the magazine in my hands and can read the review text for myself...

I won't deny I'm often critical and harsh on EDGE, but along with GamesTM, it's basically one of the very few videogaming publications worth reading. Although the main areas of interest for me are really the editorials and features, rather than the testscreen section.

In my opinion, it's almost always been EDGE's weakest area.

Now, I love R: RE see and it kind of pisses me off a bit that, on one hand, Edge rate games quite highly, based on how good it is, how it plays, etc... (e.g. 1080) and then, on the other hand, we have something like R: RE that doesn't really do anything different to any other racer (except play extremely well, like) or offer anything "groundbreaking" (debatable, in R: RE's case imho) and Edge abuse the marking system, ranking the game on anything other than how good it is.

            Dime-bar!

Yeah, like 1080 does anything better than the other sonowboarding games to deserve an 8.
Based on edge's rating system it shoud have been a 2-4. It far worst than the original on the 64, far worse than amped, far worse than ssx3.
And the funniest of all was that they commended on pgr2's framerate. In fact pgr2 is actually very playable compared to 1080's motion sickness inducing bursts of framedrop!

                10 = Revolutionary

So anything over a 5 is above average. I still think a lot of people are still looking through the "7/10 is average" glasses.
Subtract one point for every ?20 note it costs and one point for every game (that really interests you) you were going to get but can't since you're buying this.

No one pays ?4+ to see an average film. 2 hours in the dark, not being able to let rip and fart? No, you wouldn't pay for that unless it was a good movie. No one says:

"Hey, it was an average movie. So the net result is that I've spent ?4, spent an hour queing and whatnot, caused massive internal bleeding due to holding in my farts and it was an average movie"

No, games aren't average. They're either worth you purchasing or they're not. Only a wanker spends money on a game he knows is definitely going to be ****. Unless they're a collector. And they aren't gamers. More like a digital version of someone who buys Stamps.

So EDGE and every other magazine is flawed. They get games for free.
Look at Mr. martTM. Forced to buy manhunt IIRC (apologies if I'm wrong, nothing worse than being mistaken for someone else, apart from girls who think you're gay, heh).

Result? He ripped into it. Waste of money. Returned it. "No game included with the disc".

The marvellous Biffo in EDGE - has to buy his own games? Result? Ripped into KotOR for all it's flaws. Because he had to pay for it.

There is no such thing as an average game. Either "****ing awful and not worth buying" or it isn't.

For every **** game, there are least one good game you could have bought instead.

I've noticed that 2003 has been a crap year for me? Why? Probably because I realised that games have to justify why I should fork out the equivalent of a forthnight's worth of food.

Even Fur Fighters: bought for ?7. Still a piece of garbage. Even for ?7. Seven pounds wasted.

Good thing I don't review games eh?
I had to buy PoP, VJ, KotOR, Moto GP, Advance Wars, Pokemon Ruby.
For the every one of the above that was at least one other title competing for my money.

Only the last three were worth it.

And Steel Batallion? Still deciding but at the moment not worth 12 days of being able to NOT sleep on the streets

                  1080? Avalance 8/10

Don't like it so much, and the N64 version is better. Dunno what they thought to rate it so much.

For anyone who gives a ****, Edge's reasons for marking R:RE down were because they found it too easy and they didn't like the handling.

GT4 was marked down because although it gave a taster of the new graphics and physics engines, none of the new gameplay elements like the online stuff were included. They also didn't like the structure. They did comment that the low score should in no way discourage people who are looking forward to the full release.

They had gotten the finished code on the dreamcast from the devs, reviewed it, then the game never made it to the stores. hah.

I thought Dreamcast Halflife played quite well, shame it never got released.

The handling was more realistic than usual for a RR game, boo hoo they couldn't take it. As for difficulty, it can be changed of course within Racing Life, and you've got all the challenges etc to partake in, many of which are rock hard unless you are very good or can build the right vehicle.

Personally I'd only mark it down on not having a 4 player mode, but that's about it...

Just received my subscription copy of #133, and theres a bit on my Nuon controller port hack in Out There, huzzah!

The previous month they'd mentioned an earlier hack that needs two Nuon machines, whereas mine only requires one. I guess this might have helped things:

And hurrah! Another free copy of the official PS2 magazine.

In which the 29 greatest moments of 2003 are revealed, with "Enter The Matrix" winning.

I am so glad they see fit to send me this monstrosity again.

                                You're ****ing kidding me.

I bet EDGE loves the idea of them pimping other magazines that hype up games where the main character runs as if he either has physical disability or a turd in their pants. Future didn't think that was ironic? What with ETM being one of the worst games in EDGE review system for 2003
