Mine is an original model Ps2 (sch1000?) 'made in Japan' which implies it is truly one of the 1st models out of production. It's never shown any signs of trouble, and as a bonus, it runs ALL NTSC DVD's with no trouble :P
Yes, I bought it when it was 1st released. I've almost always used it vertically too, which seems to be the major cause of trouble
I understand that most PS2's end up dying though. My friends from CEX suggest that it is the most returned faulty console in history.

In fact, I've never known anyone to have a faulty PS2. To call it the most returned console ever is a bit of a mystery.
I doubt anyone still has a launch PS1 running after all these years.
And I leave my PS2 on Standby all the time, there's no way that that can damage the console. As it's the laser that usually goes, it only goes through it being used excessively, which of course Standby won't.
Messiah chipped and still going strong.
Only very occasionally will an import game not load properly, for example Shiki 1 which is a blue base disc.

Just a brief rundown of my previous Playstation/ PS2 hardware lastability:
Launch model PAL Playstation:
Lasted about nearly under a year before the infamous lens couldn't read anything - games would lag on loading time and FMV would skip a lot. Heard from many a magazine that you had to put the console to a vertical position to read the game.
Got that replaced.
Refurbished Playstation replacement:
Lasted for all of 9 months or so. I cut down my previous gaming session time from the last console to hour. Before on the launch model i was playing 2-4 hours at a time.
Go that replaced again.
2nd refurbished Playstation console:
Still working to this day... i think.
Playstation console (without the expansion port and L/ R Phono ports) stealth modded:
Again, still working to this day.
PAL PS2 v5 machine messiah modded:
Lasted for 1 year and 5 months before the lens knackered out on me. At around 10 months in (Feb 2003) i noticed the lens drive was 'clicking' and on it's way to a slow death.
My fault really, since i presume the dust clogged it up an killed it. Should've cleaned the vents/ cleaned the lens more often.
PAL v7 machine messiah 2 modded:
My current console, and being the paranoid man that i am, i'm cleaning the vents and lens cleaning it on a regular-ish basis. About every 2 weeks it get's the obsessive compulsive treatment.

I've never had any issues with Sony apart from one issue with my old wega widescreen Trinitron which they fixed the day after it broke and Sony Laptops.
I've got a huge pile of Sony gear from clock radios to clie's to hifi kit. I've got a 11 year old 21inch trinitron TV that still looks better than a lot of brand new TV's today. First major piece of non sony kit I bought were my panny plasmas and thats because Sony is very weak on the plasma front.
We've got 2 launch days PS-2s in the house and 1 launch day US PS-2 in the house also and no issues. Although we don't play any warez on them at all which I strongly believe impacts the laser if you do. All get a fairly hard use, one of the PAL machines has a DVD in it almost every night.
Sony laptops are terrible though. Avoid them at all costs, the number of issues with broken keyboards and broken pcmcia controllers and hdd controllers that we've had at work has made our IT department ban them.
Neil.

sony ps2 is the most unreliable console ive ever ownedDefinatly not replacing my broken one..
I paid ?400 for the machine on day one. Apparently all of the machines for the launch were flawed inside. After a few months it went wrong inside with its power supply and i got a reconditioned one for free.
This one lasted until its warranty ran out and did the same as the first. Sony stuff always dies after the warranty runs outNot getting another one and they can stuff their stupid badly designed ugly old pile of crap console. (although Rez, Frequency and Final Fantasy withdrawals may break me down to getting another one.. such a mug).
Apparently ALWAYS leave the console on standby. NEVER use the switch at the back. Otherwise it will blow up sooner.
Also keeping vertical gives disc read errors when the machine gets older.. and it has the same ****e ports as the PSone that wear out if you actually take memory cards out and stuff.. which u have to do a lot as most non RPG games will only use slot one and not slot two.. argh.

I've generally been fine with Sony products.
Playstation (1) lasted for years with no problems, i gave it away to a friend when i got my PS2 and it's still going to my knowledge.
PAL Pre-order Launch Playstation 2. Got it a couple of days after the official launch as some kind of stock problems, but it was the first batch (i assume) to be supplied in the UK. It's sitting under my TV and working fine 3 years on. I almost always leave it on standby when not in use, as opposed to turning it off, and it's never been vertically positioned.
PAL messiah2 modchipped PS2. Got this a year ago, and it's just given me problems, i got it sent back within the 1 year warranty, and it's gotten fixed, but it's current status is "processing" by Royal Mail, as it got sent to the wrong place, and has been bouncing around the UK for 2 weeks. I wonder if it will work after X many courier vans and handlers...
Sony 29" TV. I'll include this as people have been commenting on general Sony reliability. My old place the neighbours had a flood from their bath or cistern or something, water gushed down from the ceiling right onto the TV/Video/PS1. Like right on it, 2' any direction and it would have missed. The girlfriend tried to turn it on (It's wet!) and it had swirly black lines and nothing coming up. I had to go back to NZ for a month, so i told her dont use it at all, i'll check it when i get back. Obviously she got bored waiting, and turned it on after a week - picture was back, and its been fine another 3 years! Fortunately the replacement via insurance came when it was still "broken", so we have two now.
All in all i'm happy with the Sony products i've bought. I can kinda understand the modchipped PS2 giving out, as its had a hard life (been transported more, serious continual usage etc), and they company i got it from obviously uses trained monkeys - sorry illiterate trained monkeys, as they cant read shipping directions, and hence they might have used hammers, crowbars and mig-welders to install the chip...

Sony goods in general do not last very long, so I have stopped buying them in general.
Sony products Ive owned:
PS: Had the lense replaced twice. I dont use it anymore, but I think it still works.
Rewriter: Stopped working 2 weeks after purchase, had it replaced free of charge with some unknown company make afterwards, still going strong 2 years later after 100's of burns.
Cassette/CD player: One of those big ones, 6 months before it starting going wonky, it now wont play CDs, and the cassette sections skips somehow.
Video machine: 1 years before it started eating my tapes.
2nd machine: 8 months before tapes started getting eaten
Small TV: 2 years later and the RF and cscart cables dont work, and the screen is permanently neon white on the 1 side.
Big TV: 12 months and the scart cable produces fuzzy waves, meaning gameplaying is out of the question, I only had it to play games.
DVD player: hehehe, after the above happened, I bought the cheapest non-Sony make I could find, no region lockout, plays all types of media, still going strong.
Based on their track record, I will be curious to see how further games hardware releases fare. That PSP looks mighty fragile.
