When you work in a shop that sells them, it isnt. They simply are the most returned console out of the 3

Especially annoying is the idiots who say: "its not my ps2" "my ps2 cant scratch the disks"

ooooo but it cant im afraid

My 1nd gen Japanese machine (bought one month after its release) is still going strong, with no problems or read errors.

That said I have never had a console break on me.

Absolutely right. From my own personal "on the job" experience: I've handled loads of faulty PS2 returns, it actually kept me from buying one myself. Judging by the number of defect ones, well, I'd say you're lucky if your PS2 works fine.

I have had mine going on just over 2 yrs now. Got it chipped about 6 months ago and not had any problems.

I reguarly clean the dust out and always use it sitting in a horizontal position. Vertical is just an accident waiting to happen imo, too easy to fall over/off your cabinet and onto the floor.

I dont use mine at all to watch dvd's. I dont personallly see the point as the ps2 is mince for playing dvd's. Especially when you can pick up a decent entry level player for ?100 now.

My ps1 did kick it when it decided to take ages to load games. Thats the only console I have had that has failed on me.

          Touch wood.

But wouldn't that just be because many more PS2s are sold?

I would agree with that, and its also probably sold to the young kids who like to kick things about. I would guess that the X-boxes/gamecubes are largely bought by the older (more responsible!) gamer spending their own money, since kids will probably want to go with the mainstream choice.

I've had my PS2 since the UK launch day and so far (touch wood) not a single problem.

Gone through just a few pads though ......

I'm lucky Got mine at UK launch and sofar I've gone through 3 pads but the machine itself works perfectly. Always use it horizontal though, it seems wrong to me to have it vertical... then again my girlfriends brother has had a ps2 for a bit shorter and he's never used it horizontal and it's still doing fine as well. I generally use standby mode over the switch at the back (although I do use that when i move it around the house)

About the warranty. Sony, no matter how many times they print it on their manuals etc. are legally obliged to replace equipment that breaks within a reasonable amount of time. It's called Reasonable life-expectancy. No matter if their product says it has 30 day warranty, you can expect a console to work for three years, so sue them.

My PS worked fine for years, even after chipping. As far as I know it's still going strong (gave it away)

My first PS2 was a SCPH-10000 launch unit, and was prone to disc read errors (especially with DVD-ROM games). The one I have now though (SCPH-37000) has been perfect. It's just over a year old now, though so...*touches wood*

I've had my Messiah 1 modded PS2 for about 18 months. It leaves weird circular dots in a circle around the game disks. I'm not sure what causes it. I think it might be to do with the laser being too high (knocked out of place) but I'm not sure.

BTW how do you tell what version your PS2 is?

Or, just press the triangle button while highlighting "System Configuration".

orginal playstation lasted bout a year then would only read discs if turned upside down then wouldnt read discs at all.

first ps2, lasted 8 months then wouldnt read a single thing at all, rang sony all they said was hoover it at the vents, which did sod all, so they replaced it after numerous phone calls

next ps2 lasted a whole 4 months before it put circular straches in my games and wouldnt read owt

bought myself another ps2 n thats seems to be fine, but thats prob cos ive hardly used it

i have a sony mini hifi thing n bout 2 weeks after the warenty ran out it the second tape deck packed up and the cd drive wont read most discs

also got a trinitron tele which has been fine apart from when i dropped it and smashed it, they repaired it for me but took them nearly 4 months

have an mp3 cd player of theres which has been fine, although very little use

and finally a dvd player of theres which works mint but ive only used it for like 20mins or so

When you work in a shop, there aren't that many more PS2's sold. E.g. I counted around 3 GameCubes, 4 Xboxes, and 4 PS2s sold last Saturday.

We have a bugger load of PS2's returned. And the only reasons we've had Xboxs returned, were pre-owned ones with the eject button stuck in, and the batch we had with 3 or 4 new faulties - due to the fact that the Rainbow Six disc in the Midtown, Halo and RS3 pack didn't work. Nothing to do with the console.

I've never known a GameCube to be returned, to my knowledge.

Well a friend of mine can claim to poor PS2 build quality.

Moving his machine downstairs to the bigger telly brought about the unsuspected ability of a slippery PS2 to jump from your grip and fly downstairs, aiming to hit the least amount of stairs with maximum force. The result is a PS2 in manymany bits.

His missus came home and found him looking very mournful with 2 pads sat on his knee. To which she found very amusing.

                                Shoddy
