    True.

I remember a glut of posts and threads along the lines of "The N64 really was a great machine after all, wasn't it?" on the Edge forums, when at the time all people did was piss and moan about the fact that it wasn't more like the PlayStation (myself included).

To say Nintendo have 'totally lost it' is plain silly.

I think few could argue that Nintendo's recent output has been disappointing compared to it's halcyon days on the SNES and N64, but even Nintendo's weaker games are superior to what most companies produce.

Luigi's Mansion, Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Brothers Melee, WaveRace Bluestorm, 1080 Avalanche, Mario Kart Double Dash, Pikmin 1 & 2, Animal Crossing, Zelda Wind Waker, Zelda Four Swords, Paper Mario 2 - whilst none of these managed to improve (where applicable) upon their predecessors it's still an impressive list and one any company would be hugely proud of.

At the end of the day I still feel they are the best producers of videogames in the world, managing to knock out a string of classics which has yet to end.

People seem to complain how nintendo have lost it, but are oblivious to the fact that its mostly their fault in the first place.

When the n64 was around nintendo released triple A titles some of the best around but people complained that these titles were too far apart, not enough games released. So nintendo have tried to rectify this situation with the GC by getting third party developers to use nintendo franchises and themselves releasing a regular amount of titles. So because of this the quality of titles have slipped, people were unhappy when too few titles were released but are also unhappy about the current situation of ninty releasing too many which has damaged nintendo's overall quality.

I'm not defending nintendo their quality has slipped during this generation but i can't help but blame those who complained that nintendo were releasing too few games, hopefully with their next console they will go back to releasing a game once in a while of the highest quality. As quality is always better than quantity.

Nintendo lost there magic, TBH I am not sure they had any to begin with, they are very good at what they do had good hardware and software in the days of the NES/SNES and to be fair I sold my Megadrive about a month after purchace as I wasn't relaly interested in Segas offerings at that point of time, as much as we bitch an complain Rare carried them 99% through the N64 lifecycle, and now we have the Gamecube, good third party stuff and Nintendo still turn out one or two jems for the rest of the sub quality games they turn out, then the crazy fanboys lap it up saying things like but its gameplay not graphics, its a style, these people make me sad that I still like Nintendo as they are part of the reason that Nintendo will never change.

Why is it that anyone who either has a good word to say about Nintendo, or genuinely enjoys their products in this day and age is automatically labelled a "fanboy"?

Bah Nintendo haven't lost anything. Luigi's Mansion and The Wind Waker are 2 of the most enjoyable, and if you like, magical gaming experiences I have ever had. And that's that.

That's the biggest load of ****e I've ever read here...

I agree that Rare did provide quality for the N64 (PD being my #1 game of all time) - but not 99% of what was good on the system... You're forgetting Mario64, P-Wings, Waverace, Zelda, Majora, Starfox, F-Zero, Smash Bros., Paper Mario, Ogre Battle, Sin + Punishment, Excitebike, and probably a few more I've missed...

Look at the Cube - it's got F-Zero, Zelda, Prime1+2 (best 1-player games this gen, worth ?120 if you don't already own a cube), mario kart, not even mentioning all the Capcom stuff.

you make a very good point, you name only the 3rd and 2nd party games as being good GC games, F-zero great game but it's a Sega game,.... Metriod Prime 1+2 2 excellent games but they're made by Retro .... Viewtiful Joe and Resident Evil 4 both excellent but from Capcom...
Mario kart is crap and that's from Nintendo ..... hmmm......
Mario Sunshine and Zelda the Wind Wanker are good games but they don't even come close to the excellence of their N64 games...

I often wonder this also. Fanboy probably has to be the most overused word of our gaming times; it's a convenience really, allowing said user to dismiss a conversation without actually ever having to make an argument.

Anyway, I still have no beef with Nintendo - they can do what they like & if I don't like it, I won't buy it. Luckily for me though, the GC has been home to the biggest share if games I want to play this gen - it's a mrvellous little box & suits my needs just fine & dandy.

I appreciate many people prefer Resident Evil 4, F-Zero GX and the two Metroid installments (which are amongst my favourite games) to anything Nintendo has produced for the Gamecube, but considering the total amount of time and enjoyment I've spent playing Sega or Capcom's games, it sits in the shadow of the time and enjoyment I've spent playing Nintendo's games.

I concur. The PS2 has some lovely games (I'm not crazy about the Xbox, so I don't own one), but its the 'Cube that's stolen my heart this gen.

That's your opinion mate - I seem to remember it sold pretty well and anyone who plays it for more than 5 minutes usually seems to agree it's pretty ****ing fine - I certainly don't think it harms the MKart heritage.

If they want to farm out work that's their choice - Some of it has worked some of it hasn't.

In the N64 era with the (very notable) exception of 2/3 titles all RARE did was take a Nintendo concept (Mario64, MarioKart) and output their own versions with different IP's and more content/levels (think Banjo Kazooie, DiddyKong Racing) - Whilst these were top games they weren't anything startlingly original - Saved Nintendo knocking out Mario64 2, MarioKart64 2 etc and kept all of us quiet.

Of course the notable exceptions deserve mention also - Battlecorps, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark (again, Goldeneye revisited/remixed).

Mario kart dd was a decent game but was huge disapointment. The two characters per kart seemed like a novalty that was just tacked on and does very little for the overall gameplay. Some levels were very imaginative and were great but others were a bit boring. The battle mode which i always thought was best for multiplayer in the mario kart series, seemed uninspired and dull, a simple after thought which was a huge disapointment in DD. Overall a good game but not great not by ninty's standards anyway.
