I never really enjoyed Crazy Taxi first time around. Sure, it was fun, but challenging my scores never held that much interest for me. I found the physics to be completely pants, with the taxi going into a spaz-attack when you got near a wall.
But I've recently got a copy of this game (cheers MD! ^_^) and I've began to look deeper at it. The control system is completely sublime. At first, I was sliding like a spong all over the place. Then I got used to tapping brake whilst doing a shift-slide, which makes you go totally sideways. Then I played with the idea of choosing a spot for me to stop at, in a random direction. It's all possible!!!
Crazy Box was a great idea too. I managed to do most of them within 2 or three times. Crazy Bowling was a little tricky, but I managed it in the end. But Crazy Zigzag 2, after perfecting my drift-stop, took a couple of goes to do but when I did it, I felt so satisfyed, unlike anything I've felt in a long time. You get out exactly what you put in.
And I've wrecked 1 pad already
Whilst on the subject though, I totally loved Crazy Taxi 2. I haven't played it in a while, but it was so much more accessible, you could jump up little curbs and over traffic when you wanted. It made the whole environment more interesting too, with the skyscrapers having ledges half-way up you could hook onto, with some passengers up there. Crazy Pyramid too, was awesome. The level with the humps (oo - err) took me ages! But again, it was really satisfying afterwards.
Thing about the original is that you can really tame the mad physics to do whatever you want. By accident, I've even managed a CT2-style Jump off the ground, by shifting like a mad ferret. However, I've yet to figure out just how I did this. But I will!
Jump-drifting is a technique that's so satisfying to do too. Hit a ramp, drift a second before jumping (use the brake for maximum sideways-ness) and when you hit the ground, shift up and accelerate, and off you zoom at a 90 degree angle to what you were going in first off. Bargain!
Only problem I have is with the environments. They are often too tight to use the drifting technique, and if you do, you'll twat a vehicle around a blind bend. Makes the main game a little watered down sometimes, hence the Crazy Box being the place to be! Example, by the Church and KFC, you gotta drive properly. Any drifting will seriously mess you up.
And I've yet to play Crazy Taxi 3!
