    Crazy Taxi: revisited

I never really enjoyed Crazy Taxi first time around. Sure, it was fun, but challenging my scores never held that much interest for me. I found the physics to be completely pants, with the taxi going into a spaz-attack when you got near a wall.

But I've recently got a copy of this game (cheers MD! ^_^) and I've began to look deeper at it. The control system is completely sublime. At first, I was sliding like a spong all over the place. Then I got used to tapping brake whilst doing a shift-slide, which makes you go totally sideways. Then I played with the idea of choosing a spot for me to stop at, in a random direction. It's all possible!!!

Crazy Box was a great idea too. I managed to do most of them within 2 or three times. Crazy Bowling was a little tricky, but I managed it in the end. But Crazy Zigzag 2, after perfecting my drift-stop, took a couple of goes to do but when I did it, I felt so satisfyed, unlike anything I've felt in a long time. You get out exactly what you put in.

And I've wrecked 1 pad already

Whilst on the subject though, I totally loved Crazy Taxi 2. I haven't played it in a while, but it was so much more accessible, you could jump up little curbs and over traffic when you wanted. It made the whole environment more interesting too, with the skyscrapers having ledges half-way up you could hook onto, with some passengers up there. Crazy Pyramid too, was awesome. The level with the humps (oo - err) took me ages! But again, it was really satisfying afterwards.

Thing about the original is that you can really tame the mad physics to do whatever you want. By accident, I've even managed a CT2-style Jump off the ground, by shifting like a mad ferret. However, I've yet to figure out just how I did this. But I will!

Jump-drifting is a technique that's so satisfying to do too. Hit a ramp, drift a second before jumping (use the brake for maximum sideways-ness) and when you hit the ground, shift up and accelerate, and off you zoom at a 90 degree angle to what you were going in first off. Bargain!

Only problem I have is with the environments. They are often too tight to use the drifting technique, and if you do, you'll twat a vehicle around a blind bend. Makes the main game a little watered down sometimes, hence the Crazy Box being the place to be! Example, by the Church and KFC, you gotta drive properly. Any drifting will seriously mess you up.

And I've yet to play Crazy Taxi 3!

Yeah, the Crazy Taxi games are good fun. I have the first two games on the DC and like to dig them out occasionally.

Pity about the Offspring overload on the soundtrack, though. ft:

That's the beauty of the game, you can play it for hours, or have a quick "Arcade Rules" blast to see how far up the rankings you can get.

I've yet to meet a Green customer I can't please though

Once you work out Crazy Start and Crazy Stop, it all makes sense. The Crazy Drift is good for navigating the city section. Some knarly shortcuts and wierd folk to pick up here and there, on rooftops and such like.

Does anyone bother with the blue customers on 2? Nightmares, tbh.

Me and my housemates play Crazy Taxi all the time. There is nothing better for an inter-house scoreboard challenge type thing

I can't get any friends to play this, but again, it's great how much scope this game has. You can play Crazy Box til you're blue in the face, or play the Arcade mode til you collapse. I prefer the former to show off skillz better

Those are the multiple destination gits, aren't they? Recipe for disaster every time, I find.

Really? That's funny, because last year my flatmates would play it until about 6 in the morning... they all loved it! The appeal for them was that you could 'guarantee that something funny would happen every time you played'.

I didn't get much sleep during their Crazy Taxi phase

I've got this at home and hadn't played in ages but I found out one of my mates at uni has it and I've became addicted all over again.
The graphics are still great, even though they're dated the style shines through. The controls are sublime, they seem simple enough at first but mastering the crazy drift and other techniques moves the game up a level. Everything about the game is great from the setting, the music that fits in perfectly and the sense of humour. One of the best arcade games ever imo, and addictive as they come.

                            Will have to some time

James Harvey also lives in Stafford, as does Tobal. We should get some Halo or summat going sometime

I love Crazy Taxi, I think its one of my favours games ever. But I haven?t played it in a long, long time. I hated Crazy Taxi 2, I didn?t like the idea of jump and the game seemed different? I think it might have a different speed or maybe physics, I also don?t like Crazy Taxi 3 much, but I would still like to own it, I never really see it around any more.
