Just like most nintendo games don't need you to read the manual, in that they tell you about the game as you play.... the same goes for the endings.. you PLAY the endings.
I found the endings of TooT and TWW to be fantastic. In TooT, the escape from the tower was part of the ending. It was exciting...
In TWW, the scene with Gannondorf before the final battle was amazing. There's more to Gannondorf than just a typical "bad guy". His silhouette sitting on the end of Tetra's bed as she slept.. what an AWESOME image. In that particular game, the complete lack of music at that bit just made it all the more striking. Then we had the final battle and, when you finally demonstrate extreme OWNAGE who can possible fail to twinge when Link finally "nails" Gannondorf.
Finally, he sets off to sea, leaving his Grandma behind, he's grown now. There's no going back. The wind fills the sails and he sets off. The way the camera comes down with the wind to fill the sails was genius. imho.
Few people do endings like Nintendo. Metroid endings have always traditionally been a bit stark. There's not much to say. She's finished... although I do wish they'd shown the 100% ending by default... because that ending makes you take notice!!
I much prefer an exciting and enjoyable playable end sequence to an overlong end cut scene.
