No you're not. I personally kill the lights when I play games, but if you're using the GBA linkup, it's obviously not going to be an option.

I'd rank Four Swords as one of the best games I've ever played. This
is the game gba connectivity was invented for. It's basicly a
development and expansion of Capcom's gba Four Swords, I've always
seen it more as a gba game that has gamecube connectivity rather than
the reverse. If you don't have a gba already, perhaps this isn't your
      sort of game anyway?
To remove the gba element entirely would also remove a number of the
game's qualities. You could make a connectivity-less Four swords, but
it wouldn't be the same, it'd be simpler, less innovative, less
interesting, less fun. Or, just an entirely different game. I don't
really see how _this_ game could have included a satisfactory solution
for both gba and non-gba multiplayer.
Shouldn't Nintendo be commended for making innovative and progressive
strides in game and hardware development?
Incidentally, Four Swords is still good as a single player game,
which you can play sans gba. You will be missing out... but I think
you could get your money's worth still.
