TV Advice - One last time :)

Is it me, or is that an excellent price for an excellent TV?

I've kind of had my eye on a Plasma lately, but prices are a little out of my range for a student, I think I was kidding myself a bit. I was talking to some guy about the new Panny Plasma Viera 37" TV. But that was over ?2k. And, I was kind of interested in that. But after just finding this offer. For 1 inch less, i'm saving ?1500.

I want a step up from my 32, would this be an ace buy? It seems incredably cheap for what it offers. My friend paid that amount for his 32" version. And he's very pleased.

    Any impressions on the TV?

    Cheers,
    Scott

I`ve seen the 32inch version in action and was impressed. But i heard of a few geometry issues with the 36inch version. Also be ware that there is a problem with the progressive scan input that the image appears wobbly in one of the corners of the screen. I`m not sure if toshiba have fixed this now but an engineer can fix it for you on site though. Seeing that you have a 32inch widescreen atm i really can`t see the point in a 36 inch unless your tv is really that crap. You be better of putting the cash to the side and saving up for the plasma you want cause i`m sure we will see a price decrease within the next year or so.

Scott how the feck can you afford to spend a grand on watching tv? Spend like ?100 of that on getting pissed and put the rest in the bank seeing as youv got a lovely 32 inch tv already. I'm a student aswell and i cant afford to buy a new game at the moment let alone anything else.

Good job PGR2 is so addictive then...

I had the same exact model 007. Lovely TV, that is if you can get one with no problems, which from my experience is not likely.

The first set i had had major geometry problems. Basically the right-side edge of the picture was not straight. Engineer was called out and he couldn't fix the problem satisfactorily (sp??), although there was some improvement after his tinkering. Replacement set had a strange black shadow down the left-hand side (a few cm's from the edge) of the picture. At this point i decided to get a plasma instead.

From what i've read on the avforum its basically a lottery whether you'll get a decent set. My advice, make sure the company you deal with has good customer service.

Ah. Cheers for the reply guys.

Seems it is a bit of a lottery, I will get in contact with that website with some "What If" questions. I'll see how friendly and helpful they are about returns etc.

If not, I could buy the exact same TV from a company (Hughes Electrical) Where i've bought my other gear, and they'll simply replace the set within days if something is wrong.

Hmm. I'd rather save ?300... But, we'll see.

If nothing is wrong with it, is it a good picture? Does it do Progressive Scan? I've always wanted a TV to do that, so I can test it out. Much of an improvement over RGB?

That TV even does PAL progressive scan, or so I am told.

            Full specs are here:

I have got 28" toshiba TV and I think it has great picture quality, the only thing I had to get fixed was the progressive scan problem with NTSC GC games but that was free so I ain't bothered.

Did you even read my post? Your progressive scan question lies there

I did read it. Forgot about the Progressive Scan comment. And I read it twice. Sorry dude.

I'm now going to get in contact with that website. Cheers for your help.

Ordered. Ace stuff. Thanks for the input guys.

The guy on the phone said they've literally sold thousands of these the past few months, and only a few have come back. Sounds promising to me.

hey scott did your tv arrive? if so r u happy with it? i had the same 1 from empiredirect (not as good a price as the one u ordered though) had to return it though due to bars down left and right hand side of screen, high pitch buzzing and dirty screen so at the moment im using a 28" cheapo telly while i decide to

                      1 risk ordering another 36"
2 bite the bullet and go plasma
                      or
                      3 buy a good quality 32"

hope u have a good un

Fragmaster, Ive had the same problems - im just about to buy a new TV, and absolutely love the features of the Toshiba, but it just seems to be too much of a lottery.

I think im gonna go for one of the Panasonic 42" plasmas via avsales, 2k for a panny plasma isnt bad at all

Frag, i wouldn't risk buying another 36" CRT. It just isn't worth the hassle. Either get yourself a decent 32" (the 32" screens seem to have little or no problems compared with the 36" ones) or as you say bite the bullet and get a Plasma. I went with the latter and haven't regretted it at all.

Yep, at the end of the day I suppose you can justify it by your way of thinking -

If you Spend a grand on a CRT (while lovely quality of course), you'll still be left with sour grapes in that you'll still wish you had a plasma screen, and youve just put yourself back a grand towards that fund !

Alternatively, if you must go for a 36 CRT, have a look at the Panasonic with prog scan - TX-36PD30 - What Hi Fi has been raving about it "Panasonics flagship is packed with every image enhancing feature around, including more pixels per line than most rivals. As with all 36" CRT's, its a massive monster of a thing, but the fabulous picture provides considerable compensation : you wont see better on any television"

If you decide to go the 32" route then you should seriously consider a Loewe. I have the 32" Mimo and find it quite incredible. I have friends with more expensive Loewe models with some even nicer features but the jump in ??? is considerable.
