    BT to limit broadband transfer?

Just got an email from BT about broadband. Seems as if they're introducing a usage allowance of 15gb a month, and that i'm close to using up this allowance already. This will be coming in "early 2005" so you dont need to worry just yet, but it's a bit of a downer for all those anime downloaders/mp3/dodgy crap downloaders.

Kind of worried that when the transfer runs out you won't be able to download a thing or something, or even browse any websites, but then again, I don't really know what a usage allowance would include (web browsing? or just downloads?) Not entirely sure how much data i get through in your typical month, must be a lot because i'm "close to using up the allowance" if it were implemented. I pay ?27.99 a month for BB anyway, and I saw a TV ad for ?19.99 a month BT broadband (with a 1gb transfer limit, OUCH) so i'm not entirely sure.

If they do put a block on it you'd have to no access until the new monthly period rolls around and they reset your counter

Still, you could always use dial-up while you waited to be reset

When i had dialup they terminated my service because i went over their "limits"

So i said GTF, and joined another ISP

        Yeah,I got the email too.

15gigs is nowhere near enough for me (which their email to me already said) so what I have done is applied for the upgrade to a 1 meg line where the allowance is 30 Gigs.

I am not sure if 30 gigs is enough either (I use Bittorrent to grab TV shows) but BT have said that they will not enforce the limits until "early 2005". If it all goes pear-shaped and they start warning me I'll up sticks and **** off to another ISP too.

Looking at it now, this email was sent on July 1. Which means that during the whole month of June, I nearly went over limit, but didn't. And I DLed a hell of a lot in June, so when this gets brought in, I'll see what happens.

Im on BT Broadband aswell and was thinking of upgrading to the 1MB line until they told us that we would be without internet for a week. How **** is this, they have to cancel the package your on and reorder the 1MB line. When we originally went on to BB it took them like 4 weeks to come round so i politely told them to **** off with their 1MB connection. Ill probably get it set up when we go for a weeks holiday or something :P

I was reading on the BBC website the other day that BT are struggling to compete:

BBC, News, BBC News, news online, world, uk, international, foreign, british, online, service

Not surprising when you have piss poor customer service like that your describing.

I don't have a problem with people who use the most bandwidth paying more (I use a tonne myself) but just to flat cap it is ludicrous.

Hang on, is this BTopenworld or BTbroadband? BTbroadband doesn't include email accounts, so they couldn't email you. Heh.

edit - hmm, BTbroadband eh. No idea how they're gonna get in touch with me, then. Screw em, my 12 months of sin will be up before these changes come in.

Well no, this is what I was thinking. I suppose they'll have to pop something in the post; how ironic.

Didn't NTL say last year they were going to cap their limits to 1Gb a day?

It's the premium BT Yahoo accounts - I got the email, in which they do say:

Although the change to your Terms & Conditions is taking place now, the usage allowance will only be applied from early 2005. At that point, we'll be introducing a number of options for the few customers who may require additional capacity. We'll be in touch to tell you more about these options closer to the time
As they're not capping till 2005 I'll be staying with them, at which point I'll consider the options.

I've also got the same email, yeah the 30gb sucks. I'm upgrading to the 1mb line, which apparently takes 7-10 days and requires no modification to the line, read below:

Upgrading is easy, without changes to your existing modem or settings - we simply increase the speed! The 1Mb service is available to customers living within approximately 3.5km of a broadband-enabled exchange. Upgrades will take between 7-10 working days to complete and we will keep you informed on the progress of your order by email.
Must as well cane the crap out of it before the restriction applies. As MartyG says wait till early 2005 and see what the options are with the ISPs.

Everyone best keep their ear to the ground. A possible first move by BT to tax those putting the heaviest load on the backbone, perhaps to be followed by other ISPs.
