I've you've already got Plasma money ready to spend on film watching, you might want to consider trying out a low-end DLP, rather than a high-end LCD.

Some people have problems with the colour wheels that DLP uses, other have problems with the screendoor effect on LCD, but you won't know how you'll feel about either without a demo.

So is that a 6 foot throw distance or do you have an extremely long bed? If so, I'm curious as to how big a picture you get as that's the sort of distance I'm looking at.

My other concerns with a PJ are if it would be suited for ALL my gaming... FFXI would kill the bulb pretty quick, I also don't think it'd be ideal for multiplayer a la Pacman Vs. or something, cos all the lights would have to be off! Not exactly sociable.

Throw distance is around 9 feet, screen size is about 7 feet wide. www.projectorcental.com has a throw calculator which is pretty accurate.

Lights can still be on, low level, games tend to be bright and vivid so suffer less from ambiant light. The light reflection is easily enough to see your friends.

Well, some favourable opinions here. Looks like I'll be going for the Panny once I get my flat setup. Having looked at the place, blacking out shouldn't be a problem. I'll probably use some lights at floor level tucked away.

              Can't wait!

I have had my AE200 for a year now, and I love it to bits. Setup required a bit of tinkering with furniture first (as currently its in the bedroom), but now its done I love it and will never go back.

DVDs look absolutely fantastic (I have a prog scan Sony DVD player), and GC through RGB or component is ace. Most GC games run in 480p which look awesome. PS2 looks really good through RGB, and Xbox looks good, but then Xbox's RGB isn't great at the best of times - its just a bit soft around edges, but its PERFECTLY acceptable. VGA Dreamcast Daytona, or Cosmic Smash? You can't believe the quality. Rez 5.5ft? OMG

I also have a Sony CRT for daytime TV viewing and normal gaming, which is handy when its too light, you can't be bothered to play through projector or don't quite think its worth it. When I first got it, last September, I hammered it for hundreds of hours, on Rainbow Six, Project Gotham 2 and DVDs, but now I have tailed off using it so much, and just leave it for the special games/films. Riddick looked awesome Its just sometimes you don't want to sit in a dark room to play games, and that for me is the only slight downfall with projectors.

I wasn't 100% sure about getting one, then I played F-Zero, Halo and watched a movie on a mates, and have never looked back since... I love it.

I took some pics a while back. My screen is about 5.5ft across.

Have fun. I seriously recommend demoing a projector, as honestly, I couldnt do without one now... Just like broadband internet, you'd be lost without it once you've tasted it.

5.5ft DC? that sounds like the kind of sizes I'm dealing with here... how far back do you sit and is there any trace of this 'screen door effect'?

I'm really torn... for me it's either a cheap bulky 28" widescreen telly for gaming, or going for the projector. (The telly is the option that would seem out of place in the room in question). But like you say, sometimes you're just not going to want that level of intensity.

And it would render EyeToy totally useless, as well...

I am 9ft from the screen mate. Well the screen wall to projector wall is. And the projector sticks out a foot-ish off its stand to allow for cooling. I sit underneath it.

I only notice screendoor when you look really closely at the display up close. From sitting back, watching a flick or playing Biohazard (oh yes, **** yourself time), you don't see it. I have sometimes noticed really light, vertical lights in ultra light scenes on DVDs (like the NY Skyline in Ghostbusters, for example), but its just part of the technology, and its very very minor.

If you're interested, when I set mine up, I did a little page on my website for it. Have a look if you like:

                        Original setup page:

                        Update with new furniture

                        Some random pics

If you want to know anything, please feel free to ask and I'll do my best to help. I got loads of advice and help before I did it (as its expensive), so ask away

Darwock, do you have a TV at the moment you can keep for daytime/regular gaming?

Yeah, I have a PAL (multiregion) PS2 set up in my lounge on a 28" telly.

All my import stuff is going into this 2nd bedroom... the only real problem would be for the stuff like super monkey ball etc that you'd rather play in more relaxed surroundings, I'd have to carry the stepdown and the console through to the lounge. It's not a huge problem mind you! I've also got a crappy 14" I could use in the other room.

After measuring, I am looking at an 8ft wall to screen distance, so that's about 7 foot throw and I'll be sitting about 7 foot away too I guess. Hmmm.

I do actually have another question DC, how high up the wall is your PJ mounted? It looks pretty close to the ceiling but you're screen is at a reasonable height.

Damn it, will you all stop talking about Plasma's and Projectors !

You've got me thinking about getting one again now after I'd squashed the idea from my mind a few months back.

I'm eyeing up the series 6 Panasonic Plasma again....... gargh !
