BT ditches broadband line length limit

BT says it has effectively removed the limit on 512Kbps services, bringing the prospect of universal broadband coverage in the UK one step closer.

After running a series of trials in broadband blackspots around the UK, BT has managed to extend the reach of its ADSL products.

As well as making 512Kbps available to virtually the whole population, the success of BT's trials also means that 1Mbps ADSL will now work over 6km -- compared to a previous limit of 4km.

Wait, so does that mean that if the town next to me has an upgraded exchange they could send that to my home.

They are about... 4 miles away, so that's around 6.4km away so they may be able to send it my way.

OH PLEASE GOD. I've been sooooo oooo ooooooooo oo oooo oo patient!

IIRC, anyone who is on a DSL enabled exchange can now get 512k. Well, almost:

According to BT, this means that all but 0.2 per cent of homes and businesses connected to an ADSL exchange should be able to get broadband.

My exchange isn't on a DSL enabled exchange. But the town next to me is which is about 6.4km away... at a stretch it's 7km. I am about 700m from my stone-age exchange.

Although, thinking about it. The school which is about 50 meters away from the exchange as high-speed internet access... how can they do that? Does that mean it is DSL enabled for the school which they can now give to us...

...no it can't becuase I was talking to this BT bloke who said they need to upgrade.

Actually... I'm stupid. They couldn't do that

I'm on a different exchange... they couldn't change me... could they?

Perhaps the school has had a line connected from the other exchange? Unless they have a "high speed" ISDN2e line, heh.

The other exchange isn't getting done for another 3 months... I'd prefer to wait 3 months than 30 months

I've downloaded at a 128KB/s from school... even more at times... while others are browsing... I don't know how fast ISDN2e is though...

I think I'll give BT a call tomorrow or summit.

Not that fast 128k sounds more like 1meg. Not on satellite or something, are they?

They're probably on a leased line.
Most schools got them in the last few years.

Closer to 1.5k a year. And it's 2Mb at the moment in all schools, moving to 8Mb by 2006.
