    OSX 10.3.5 + Xbox + usb Modem + help!

I've just received my Tesco BB, the modem is usb.
I realise with this modem I'll have to hook it up to my iMac and run a crossover cable to my Xbox in order to get on xboxlive. Does anybody know of a how to page or give me some info on getting this reight first time?

    Cheers people

Uh-oh... USB modem. Sounds like trouble, no matter what OS you're using.

Anyway. First, you'll have to find the OS X drivers for your modem, if it's not detected when you plug it in. What brand is it?

Once the drivers are installed, sharing the Internet connexion is a cakewalk. Just open the system prefs, go to the Sharing pane, Internet tab. Adjust the settings to your configuration (from: modem, to: Ethernet) and hit Start.

By the way, you don't need a crossover cable. Apple network cards have an 'auto-crossover' function, which means you'll never need anything but straight cables.

Cheers mate, I'm assuming the drivers came with the Tesco pack CD - it says its mac compatible and has an installation CD. I think the modem is a speedtouch 330? can't check as I left it at home before coming to work.

If it's Mac compatible, then yes, chances are the driver is either on the CD, or not needed.
Worst-case-scenario, Mac drivers for Speedtouch modems can be found here: http://www.speedtouch.com/support.htm

Once you're getting online ok with the USB modem go to System Preferences, Sharing and then Internet and turn on Internet Sharing for the ethernet connection

Plug the crossover in between the Mac and Xbox, turn on the Xbox and it *should* just work out of the box...

Yup, just tried it and it worked on mine (normally use a router)

Oops, looks like someone beat me to it.

Got the USB modem working fine, Xbox is a little more troublesome!
When I turn internet sharing on, then go back to network it has an orange light and says " The cable for built-in Ethernet is connected, but your computer does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the internet."
Any help, I know I'm being dumb....

Well that's prob because it was trying to get an IP from a DHCP server or something like that...

I'm in work and left my laptop at home so I can't check how mine was configured when I got it working... normally I use a router and wireless so I can only imagine that everything is set to default.

Yes, the NIC in your Mac is looking for a DHCP server and not finding one. You need to configure its IP address manually.

Open the system prefs, Networking pane, and select "create a new configuration". Call it "XBox ICS", or whatever. Select it.

Now, go to the Ethernet configuration screen. In "IPv4 configuration", select "Manually". Then, input the following:
                IP Address: 192.168.0.1
                Subnet: 255.255.255.0

Apply the changes, wait a few seconds, restart Internet Sharing and boot up your XBox. It should work.

If it still doesn't, you need to configure your XBox's IP address manually. Input the following:
                IP Address: 192.168.0.2
                Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (the address you assigned to your Mac)

Ok, After doing all the above. When I select my new xbox config, it closes down my internet connection config. Any ideas? It's a speedtouch 330 usb. No router.

ok, blank the last message. Got both the Speedtouch and Ethernet on green light in Network status.
Speedtouch says "you are connected to the internet vai Speedtouch USB."
Ethernet says "currently active and has the IP adress 192.168.0.1"

Xbox still won't connect - anymore ideas? What am I doing wrong???

Edit: It's asking for dns, it says it can't find any.

                          OSX 10.3.4 + Xbox + usb Modem + help!

                          Hey There,

I really hope you can help me out, I have been reading your messages carefully and it looks like you have cracked it!!! which gives me hope... I seem to have a similar set up to you (Speedtouch 330,Mac G4 Powerbook,Pipex ISP).

I seem to be goin thru exactly what you have been thru, this is the stage I'm at:

"When I select my new xbox config, it closes down my internet connection config. Any ideas? It's a speedtouch 330 usb. No router."

I've just copied and pasted this in the hope that it would take you back to the nightmare!!!

I'm a bit confused as to what the next stage is??

Would be great if you could help

                          Thanks

Here are my exact settings. Go to NETWORK in System prefs.
"LOCATION": is called Tesco Broadband (for me)
"SHOW": drop down to "Speedtouch USB"
PPP: Fill in Provider, Account Name & Password
TCP/IP: Configure using PPP, manually put in your DNS Servers
                            Proxies: Leave alone
                            Modem: Select SpeedTouch USB
Apply - do not close down

                            IMPORTANT
You do not need to configure a seperate "LOCATION" for Xbox, all this takes place in your tesco Broadband "LOCATION" (or whatever you've called it).

Go back to "SHOW" and select "Built-in Ethernet"
                            TCP/IP: Configure Manually - IP Address: 192.168.0.1 - Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
                            AppleTalk: Make active
                            Ethernet: Configure manually - Speed: 100baseTX - Duplex: full-duplex

Go back to "SHOW" Network Port Config, drag configs so it reads SpeedTouch, Built-in Ethernet, Internal Modem, Bluetooth.

                            Apply

Go back to Sytem prefs and select "Sharing"
select internet tab, "share your connection from" select SpeedtouchUSB "to computers using" check Built-in Ethernet

Press the Start button to enable Internet Sharing. Save all if asked to.

                            CONFIGURE XBOX TO:
Configure your XBox's IP address manually. Input the following:
                            IP Address: 192.168.0.2
                            Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (the address you assigned to your Mac)

Shut Mac down, hook up Xbox to it. START Xbox first, then start Mac.

Goto to System prefs again and select "Network"
Click on "SHOW" and select Network Status, you should have a green light by "Built-in Ethernet"
Click on Speedtouch USB, click Connect (Internet Connect should open) click Connect again.
you should now have green lights on both and are ready to connect to XBL!!

Let me know how you get on.

                            Note:
You always have to turn on Xbox first, before Mac. If you have enabled "Connect in your finder, you can connect by clicking on the phone icon"

One final thing, if upon staring your mac you get an internet connection warning about the setting not existing - ignore it, it's fine.

Thanks for getting back to me.
I have done everything you have said apart from putting in my DNS servers!
Sorry for my ignorance but where do I get this info?

Thanks again I think I'm nearly there!
ps. If this doesn't work could be something to do with my ISP (pipex)?

                              Cheers
