the only time I ever got dns problems was when I was using ICS and my firewall wasn't properly configured

Have you tried the pc mac address in the xbox and a direct connection to the modem using a straight netwrok cable (if you were using ICS before it would have been a crossover hence the no ip address)

With NTL and a standalone modem (is it standalone) you shouldn't even have to clone the pc's mac address for it to work (with a set top box you do though)

I only clone my mac address so i don't have to reboot the modem before i switch on the xbox

right then, the problem is apparently being solved. I can't connect to Xbox Live because I don't have the xbox package. I was promiised that I would get a better service for exactly the same price and I've actually got to pay an extraq fiver.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. NTL are ****ing *****

        you dont need it though

        its a con tbh

all you get is another ip address which isn't needed

I don't have it and I am on LIVE fine

try a straight netwrok cable directly connected to the modem and the xbox and clone the pc's mac address

you honestly don't need to spend the extra ?5 a month to get it to work

tbh I would do the same thing myself if I could be bothered to get a telephone line installed by the pc

It may be worth a visit anyway, they should be able to get you up and running.

I don't understand why its not working using ICS though

use a x-cable from the xbox to the PC then enable ICS on the internet connection in network properties(not the connection to the xbox). disable the firewall while you test.

on the xbox set everything to auto. That should work.

                              Strider.
                              I works like this.....
First leave your BB USB connection to NTHell well alone.

Disable your firewall for the moment. Note if using McAfee Internet Security cahnge to something else as it's ****e for hoem networking.

Next get a CROSSOVER RJ45 Networkcable and plug one end into your Xbox and the other end into your PC's network port.

Enable ICS on your NTHell connection....
                              Start
                              Control panel
                              Network connections
Right click on your NTHell connection (which will say it's on a USB adaptor) then select the advanced TAB.
Check the option to allow other users to share your internet connection.
(Sharing your internet connection enables DHCP which will automatically give an IP address to your Xbox when it boots up)
                              Restart your PC.

                              Turn on your Xbox.
Keep an eye on your PC for messages such as 'New network found' etc and deal with them in an afirmative manner.

Once your Xbox is on live restart your firewall and deal with the 'New network found' messages from that as well.
