Graphically, this game is flawless on my machine, but the sound is letting it down. Small delays at action hectic points, and overall it is fuzzy and echoed. Is this a common problem??
Get small stutters in frame rate when caching but is hardly noticeable so the visual side so far is jaw dropping. Need to get the sound sorted to get the most out of this. Running it on Soundblaster 5.1, surround sound speakers. Rig is P4 3GHz, Radeon 9800 Pro, 512 RAM. Hopefully there be some fixes in place soon cause have found quite afew gripes with the sound.

I didnt have many sound glitches until going back to City 17 now its terrible, it does ruin the enjoyment somewhat. Oh someone at work registered Steam online at someone elses house, but is awaiting Broadband, of course Steam doesn't want to play offline even though you are meant to be able to. Any way to get around Steams rubbish offline mode?

Has anyone tried running it on a system as bad as mine? I've got 512Mb RAM and an XP 2600+, but my graphics card is only a 64Mb GeForce Ti4200. Above the minimum spec on the back of the box, but you know how useful that is. In a particularly odd move, Valve only let you try the performance benchmarking program after you've handed over your cash, so I can't just test it myself.

Ta muchly. I really, really ought to complete Doom 3 first (which I've been ignoring due to a shedload of console games), but I'll go ahead and sign up for Steam once the fuss has died down.
edit - actually, that should probably help people answer it - Doom 3 is (just, barely) acceptable on my box, so as long as HL2 runs at least as well I'm fine. I guess I'll be missing all that DX9-shaded water, though.

I read that too. Bloody hope so.
Valve seem to think it's a texture compression problem so they're looking to load them all in during a checkpoint rather than on the fly. Which suits me fine, although to be honest, I've tried not wearing my headphones when I game on my PC in playing Half-Life 2. Using speakers and changing the audio options to '2 speakers' instead of 'headphones' has helped the stuttering, or my ears aren't as acutely aware of it as before.
I nearly do all my gaming through headphones usually.Last edited by Concept; 22-11-2004, 17:10.

Everyone with sound probs should try going into direct X diag and turning off hardware acceleration on sound.
to do that type dxdiag in the run box that can be found in START> run...
Then in the window that appears click on "Sound" then move the bar for "Hardware Sound Accelaration level" from the right to the left until it says "No Accelaration"
(sorry for explaining this but some people may not know)

I recall having a similar problem in Far Cry where some of the textures on the rocks would be missing or they'd be just plain black with my radeon 9800 pro. I installed the latest Cats at the time and it sorted everything out. If you already have the latest drivers, possibly roll back to previous versions?
