Glad (well sort of) that it's not just this machine then. Thanks for that.

Edit - Steam News "Update: If you were having trouble launching games, please exit and restart Steam"

Luck is not on my side when it comes to technology. I've tried so many methods you wouldn't believe to cure my PC of this stuttering Half-Life 2 bug, but none of them properly work to the full.

Hopefully in a few months it should be sorted.

As for your problems MartyG, sorry about that.

It's working on my work PC again now, the update to the update fixed it. Still no joy with my home PC though

Still, the bosses think I'm working late

This game is a ****ing nightmare. I STILL HAVEN'T COMPLETED IT YET.

First I had a problem connecting to the STEAM, that took a whole night. Then I was able to varify and play for a while. I had **** to do, so I wasn't able to play on it a lot which was cool becuase what I played I enjoyed.

Then I downloaded the patch and I played it straight after and the game seemed to run a bit poorly. More jumpy where as it was smooth before. But I'm back in City 17 and that's cool. And now I've taken the day off work to finally complete it and I can't play. It just says 'connecting Steam Account' and hangs indefinitely.

I have no idea WTF to do and I want to cry.

            ****ing *****.

Crap. I left my PC idle for a couple of hours and it connected, I started to download the update, but it's too big. I can't download it in time. I don't know whether it'll resume, but that's annoying. The big problem now is that I was pissing about and I stuck everything on maximum and not it can't lock vertical buffer and there is a memory issue or something, I can't remember the error message. So I need to change my settings without having to load up the game. So is there a config file I can **** about with, or something. I've looked through the HL2 directory and I can't find it.

              I'm sad

Sorry, wrong thread. I forgot. I'm just too angry!

I've looked at a couple of cfg files, not in the directory you mentioned, but a search found similar ones. I was unable to see how it is possible to change the video settings though without loading up the game... which crashes when I do

****, I can't fix this at all. I've had a hunt around the internet, and I've not seen anything. Most forums where I'd probably get most information take too long to load on my damn connection.

I turned up the settings to max while I was playing and the following errors came up and the game turned off. I try to turn the game on and it shows the valve logo. It then shows the picture of the chapter blurred, and loads in the corner. The res is 1600x1200 and so I assume the whole thing is retaining the previous settings which is stupid. Surely if it closes it should default to the last stable settings. It then brings up the same error messages and shuts down the game. I can not get around it.

If you have any suggestions or anything, please help... please

                    Here are the error messages:

I assume everyone else has got bored of waiting for Valve to fix the sound. Anyway, I came across this little piece of advice, hidden away somewhere.

Apparently, the latest mini patch added another command to try.

Right click on half-life 2 in the Steam games list and select 'properties' then click the 'launch options' button. Add the text '+snd_async_prefetch_priority 1' then click OK and launch half-life 2

Nips: Looks like you don't have enough VRAM. Turn down the settings man!

Funny enough I was wondering about this last night ( haven't played the game for a while now )

Bit of a worry that its been a month now and nothing firm in the way of fixes from Valve. Is the Source engine really fux0red I wonder ?

Guess it will be another 5 years till Half Life 3

It's just current technology with most users which is likely the problem. No doubt when we're all on 5Ghz, 3GB DDR RAM, 1GB VRAM PCs three years down the line, Source will have no problem at all.

The immediate future still looks up in the air though with the stuttering.

Valve probably think that they have fixed it, when people are just too lazy to keep complaining (with the exception of the steam forums). I intend to show my friends at a Christmas LAN if it isn't fixed. Then play HL2 on their machines.

I'm so pissed off. Havn't played this for about a two weeks now, got back to it today hoping I'd get in a good, peaceful, 3 hours or so. Auto-update and now it just crashes with null-pointer references on loading or within 2 mins of playing...

I thought games code monkeys were meant to be good?
