Defragmented my hard drive again, before starting Steam to download this patch, so I'm not entirely sure which has had the change of effect. It's probably the patch though, considering defragmentation hasn't changed Half-Life 2's performance on my system before.

The latest update seems to have actually helped a big deal. Water Hazard is no longer a big stuttery mess, and a few key stutters in city 17 early on are thankfully absent and more reduced (for example, at the start of route kanal, shooting a barrel would cause a stuttering explosion for about 5-6 times, now it's gone).

A big thumbs up for me with this patch. Although I've not had chance to try it on some of the problem chapters (Anti-citizen one, Follow Freeman) later on, the stuttering seems to be minimal from what I have tested, and it doesn't harm the immersion of losing yourself in the game as much.

    Good stuff.

I'm having a real tough time with HL2 atm...

Basically it crashes after anywhere between 30 mins to and hour with the error "The instruction at <some memory location> could not be read..."

The funny thing is I get **** all stuttering!

      My system is an Athlon64 3500+, 1GB Corsair TwinX in DDR400 (2-2-2-5 I believe) on an Abit AV8 mobo and while I wait for my 6800 I'm using a GF4 Ti4200 in AGP8x

I've ran tested the CPU and RAM and my system temps are all pretty good (CPU is about 52 under load) but the thing just won't ****ing run right

Updating my BIOS was little help and it's a clean install of Windows!

Once I get my new card I'll test is again... I actually HOPE it's the game and not my new computer.

Valken, I get the same problem as you - but after only five - ten minutes...

I'm going to get a debugger on the bastard and see what's causing it this weekend - Valve and their stupid patches and 'no warranty whatsoever'.

After the latest steam update I cant play multiplayer for any longer than 10 minutes without the thing dropping to desktop, great one Valve :|

            It's pretty frustrating isn't it?

Have you had stability issues with any other apps at all? What system spec do you have?

No stability problems with _any_ other game, this all started with a patch they released a while ago - everything was fine before then. I've re-installed the game (which isn't nice through Steam) and tried different graphics drivers - nope.

Stupid Valve and their cumulative patching bollocks.

Yeah, I downloaded mine in work and used the Steam backup utility, copied it to a DVD and brought it home... I'm wondering if that has something to do with it...

It's interesting that the prob started happening for you after one of the patches... any idea which one?

It seemed to work fine on my old P4 1.8GHz system around Christmas but I stopped playing it on that pretty sharpish.

My computer's new so I haven't tested much else so tbh I can't rule out anything hardware related just yet.

my system is a amd 64 3200, gig of ram, and a nvidia gt 6800 graphics card

Yeah, usually you only hear about the problems... Doesn't really help my predicament unless you want to tell me the secret of your success or send me your PC though!

                    EDIT:

Well I installed my Leadtek 6800GT, reinstalled the drivers and things are actually worse now...

                    Everything else seems fine!

                    *cries*

I'm sorry I bothered building teh ninJA!!oneoneone computer.

Just a little followup... I think I solved my prob although I've only tested a few hours play...

Found this on the Steam support site... I'd tried most of the suggestions but I noticed this...

14.?Put this CVAR?in your HL2 launch properties and see if it helps:

                      ?????-window +mat_forcehardwaresync 0
I gave it a shot and I managed almost 2 hours nonstop play without the error I described.

I *did* notice that there was a LOT of frame skipping in places where the error occured. Looking at the console it would seem that autosaving was part of the issue so I disabled that too and all was well!

                      *pleases*

HL2 did crash while I was testing it though... I was doing Route Kanal again when I went into a new area but the map didn't load... looked like a genuine bug rather than a hardware fault...

My CPU temp never went over 57*C and that's with stock cooling and a single fan Antec Sonata case. I'll need to test it more before I'm satisfied but I reckon I'm sorted. At least until they update the game again!

I hooked my games PC up to the net for the first time in months to get HL2 working again (it claimed it had lost my Steam account details ) and updated the game and Steam. Plugged the modem back into my server and tried to run HL2 in Offline mode and it said "The game is not ready for offline mode".

                        Why.

Why does this game have to cause so many problems?! What happened to the "once authenticate you'll never need to connect again!!!" bull****...

                        Comment

Set the game to not 'update automatically'. Then if there are updates which cause problems, you won't receive them (in theory). It's what I've done since the latest patch improved matters for me - I'm not risking another patch off-setting the improvements.

I don't know why Steam has trouble on some PCs with this. When I start Half-Life 2, I get a choice to load Steam offline if my connection isn't already online. However, I have had that message ('the game is not ready for offline mode') once before when I reinstalled Half-Life 2 and Steam had to validate my files again.

See it says that it needs updating (where is the update button? Can't seem to find one), and that Offline Mode is not ready.

Is even the latest patch b0rked as well (if I can somehow find a way of appeaing it by updating....)

It should update automatically if your internet connection is opene and you don't have a firewall blocking it.

As Spatial says, you can't avoid Steam system updates (these aren't patches, but application changes).

It usually says 'Platform Updating' when you restart Steam. I don't know what the problem is (the latest patch is fine on my system).

Worst-case scenario you may have to reinstall again.
