There are actually three revisions of the GameCube:

      1) original
      2) serial port 2 removed
      3) serial port 2 and digital a/v removed

to my knowledge these have all turned up in ntsc markets, but pal cubes still have both addtional ports.

Yes, but I'd happily settle for having 44.1kHz PCM go directly to my amp rather than stereo phono leads running from the TV output.

Yeah, you're not the only one. I'd also happily put up with multi-disk games if it meant I could get crystal clear, uncompressed 5.1 positional audio out of games like Prime - they'd benefit so much from it... just like Halo does.

I saw a mod somewhere where an optical port was added to the back of the gamecube.

Funny thing is, stuff like Super Monkey Ball 2 actually has "Dolby Digital" and the 5.1 logo on both the box and disc. Something we don't know?

But Dolby Digital (proper DD) is compressed. The output from the Cube would be uncompressed stereo (with DPL2 encoding where relevant). 5.1 without lossy compression (if anyone has ever heard MLP) is absolutely stunning, but few have a amp that can cope with it.

As for why SMB2 has a DD logo on it, its the same reason the VHS tapes of Episode One did; companies went through a phase of incorrectly using the DD logo for DPL2.

Oops, my bad. You know what I'm getting at, I'm sure.

Yeah, irrespective of the compression issues, DD 5.1 usually sounds better than DPL2 (though not by much on a good system fed digitally).

When did Ninty start production of US cubes without the digital port? Was it november?

Is v1.07 the latest GameCube Action Replay? Is v1.07 the one needed to boot imports on US cubes without the digital port?
