    Apple price scam in the UK

    Why are they so damn expensive in the UK?
    Some units have over 50% markup compared to their US counterparts!

    As MD just pointed out on IRC it would be cheaper to fly over myself, buy one and bring it back.
    Is there any real reason for the massive price differential?

    Many people here (uk) would buy anything with the right label.

      Because for some reason Apple get away with blaming VAT. Which we all know is a load of bollocks, seeing as 17.5% does not equal a nearly 50% increase.

      Rip off bastards i telleth ye

        Simply because people buy them at that price, would you sell something at ?100 if you knew without a doubt that it would go for ?150? I don't think so.

            & thats why its best to import. Teach em a lesson the more people keep buying them at ripoff inflated prices the more they will keep doing it.

              Has anyone imported a Mac laptop from the US? If so, where from?

              This thread should probably be in the PC forum, mods.

                edit - Not mine, Natch. I prefer XP. But to jump on topic again, isn't everything more expensive over here as standard? I vaguely remember us going to war with France circa 1400AD when they tried to sell us some cheap stuff.

                  Top end powerbook. (apple store)

                  States = ?1,446.96 (even with VAT.. ?1,700)
                  U.K. = ?1,949.00

                  So where does the extra ?250 per unit come from? O_o

                    I suppose a strong pound at the moment helps with that, but when you consider Dell et al manage to sell their guff at comparable US/UK prices, it just reaffirms my belief that Steve Jobs ****s diamonds.

                      I'm ok with 250 extra, but 50% markup, can anyone tell me if that affects iMac G5s? I'm seriously considering one.

                          The only answer is to move to the good ol US of A.

                            That M3 price looks suspect, I think its more like 32K [plus Tax which US companies don't include on advertising. Go in to any shop and the price you pay isn't the price thats on the item].

                            The main issue at the moment is the exchange rate which against the USD is at its lowest for 15 years. Companies are waiting to see if this is going to stabalise before the adjust prices. Dell and a number of other US companies have reduced inlight of this though. Its difficult thing to do though as if you get it wrong you can suffer big time.

                            Neil.

                              Also I think BMW have increased the prices on European imports.
