If they were Mac haters, I doubt they would care (or even know) about the price difference. It's just that loads of people (now me included) want an iPod, and it's pretty depressing how expensive they are here in comparison to the US.

1Gb model is $150, or ?80. Add ?14 VAT, and you're only talking a fiver's worth of difference. So it's not so much Apple ripping you off as Gordon Brown.

Yes, I did. I flew over for work, got me one (PB15") over there, went to the local Apple Store with a local student and got the student discount aswell. In all, saved me about ?1000.

I did the same thing last time on holiday. Just waited til I went over and bught an iBook saving about ?250 on the UK price. Just be sure to watch out for Customs and either ditch the box or post them back. Otherwise you could be stung for tax and import duty.

I think I may have to pay a visit to my US friends sometime soon. I've been thinking about an iBook for myself. Though now I'm wandering if I can time my visit around when the G5 Powerbooks are launched if I could pick myself up a G4 Powerbook at a bargain price. Hmmmmm.

Except that rumour says that the original rumour was caused by a typo on the Chinese manufacturer's original data, and it's only faster versions of the G4 coming in iBooks and PowerBooks that are coming in Q2.

Given the heat and power requirements of the G5 currently, I wouldn't expect a laptop version yet.
